Simplifying measurement with the Google tag

Measurement is the bedrock of digital advertising. Accurate measurement relies on robust tagging to help you reach people who have visited your website or app. It also serves as the foundation of a privacy-centric measurement strategy revolving around information people agree to share with you, so-called consented, first party and modeled data. It’s critical that advertisers have durable, sitewide tagging in place as legacy identifiers such as third-party cookies are phased out. Tagging will help you strengthen user privacy, keep up with rapidly changing regulations and continue measuring performance and modeling insights.

Evolving with your measurement needs

To help you keep pace with industry changes, we've centralized our tagging solutions with Google Tag Manager, an enterprise tag management system, and the global site tag (gtag.js), which lets advertisers send event data to Google Analytics, Google Ads and Google Marketing Platform. But we’ve heard from you that tagging is still cumbersome.

Today, we’re further improving the tagging experience with the new Google tag — a single, reusable tag built on top of your existing gtag.js implementations that helps you confidently measure impact and preserve user trust. Starting today and rolling out over the next week, the Google tag will unlock new capabilities to help you do more, improve data quality and adopt new features — without requiring more code. As we’ve previously recommended with the global site tag, the Google tag should be installed on all pages of your website.

For customers using Google Tag Manager, you will not experience any changes to your setup today. But, stay tuned for future updates on tighter integration and upgrade paths between the Google tag and Google Tag Manager.

Centralized sitewide tagging

Advertisers with multiple instances of gtag.js can now combine those tags and centrally manage their settings in the Google tag screens in Google Ads and Google Analytics. Since it’ll be easier to set up sitewide tagging and combine or reuse tags, you can easily increase the number of tagged pages with consistent configuration. This helps improve measurement, leading to better-quality customer insights. You can also now manage user access to your tag settings across products in one dedicated place, giving you more control over who has access to critical measurement settings. Rest assured, your existing gtag.js implementations will continue to work and will automatically become the Google tag.

Faster and easier setup

In the coming months, you’ll also be able to use your existing Google tag installation when setting up another Google product or account or creating new conversion actions, instead of configuring additional code each time. We’ve simplified complex workflows for a simple and quick setup experience that works across Google Ads and Google Analytics, within the product interfaces that you’re already familiar with.

And, for customers using popular content management systems like HubSpot, Squarespace or Wix, you’ll be able to install a new Google tag without any code at all.

Preparing today for the future

The Google tag is a new centralized approach to tagging, integrated with many of our other privacy solutions to give advertisers more control and ease of use. As with your existing gtag.js and Google Tag Manager implementations, the Google tag continues to work well with solutions such as Consent Mode and Server-Side Tagging.

The Google tag is the first of many improvements to come and we’ll have more to share in coming months so you can better prepare today for the future.

Google Ads Scripts migration office hours

The new experience for Google Ads scripts has been available for a while, so hopefully you've had a chance to try it out and enjoy all the benefits it has to offer. There are a few differences from the old scripts API, which we've documented in our migration guide.

If you've given those a go, reached out on our forum or to our support alias for assistance, and are still having any difficulties understanding the changes or having problems migrating a particular script, we are launching a limited series of office hours sessions on a first come, first serve basis.

As a reminder, we will begin migrating scripts automatically to the new experience starting in September of this year, and will be migrating all scripts to use the new scripts experience in October.

Chrome for Android Update

Hi, everyone! We've just released Chrome 104 (104.0.5112.69) for Android: it'll become available on Google Play over the next few days.

This release includes stability and performance improvements. You can see a full list of the changes in the Git log. If you find a new issue, please let us know by filing a bug.

Android releases contain the same security fixes as their corresponding desktop release, unless otherwise noted.

Google Play Indie Games Festival: Finalists revealed

The Indie Games Festival shines a spotlight on some of the best games on Google Play, and celebrates the passion and creativity that small games studios bring to gamers worldwide. This year we are hosting Festival in South Korea, Japan and Europe, for local developers and gamers from all over the world.

Earlier this summer, we opened submissions, and today we’re revealing the finalists. Scroll down to see the shortlisted games!

Join the finals

September 3rd will be a jam packed day for indie games fans. Everyone is invited to attend the finals for the three Festivals, starting with South Korea at 2pm KST, followed shortly after by Japan at 3pm JST, and wrapping up with Europe at 11am CET.

The finals will be held in a custom virtual world where you can meet the people behind the finalist games, explore the titles, have fun with gamers from around the world, and be the first to discover the winners.

The events will be hosted by Julia Hardy (Europe), Inho Jung (Korea) and Kajisac (Japan).

At the European finals we will also reveal the class of 2022 of the Indie Games Accelerator, a program that helps small game studios take their game to the next level by providing them training and mentorship.

    This feature enables educators to browse, assign, and grade compelling content for their classes and allows both educators and students to access their EdTech tools without having to go through various login steps, such as remembering numerous usernames and passwords, or having to navigate to external websites and apps. 

    In addition to saving educators and students time, this provides a more streamlined experience when using technology to make an impact on learning.

    We know that educators have go-to digital tools to make their lessons more engaging. But with that comes the challenges of managing multiple accounts and passwords, helping students navigate other websites, and handling grading on different platforms. Now, educators will be able to easily find, add, use and grade content from popular EdTech tools, right within Google Classroom. Add-ons provide a better end-to-end experience to not only save time for educators, but also simplify the digital classroom experience for students, too.

    To make EdTech tools work better together, we partnered with 18 partners to offer add-ons for Classroom. You can do things like assign a trivia game from Kahoot!, browse content from IXL’s repository by subject or grade level, and make it easy for students to access interactive Pear Deck presentations, all within Classroom. With the content and activities of these educational partners accessible within Classroom, we hope it’s even easier to diversify your lessons and help students learn in new ways.

    To start, we’ll have add-ons from Adobe Express for Education, BookWidgets, CK-12, Edpuzzle, Formative, Genially, Google Arts & Culture, Google Play Books, IXL, Kahoot!, Nearpod, Newsela, PBS LearningMedia, Pear Deck, SAFARI Montage, Sora from OverDrive Education, WeVideo and Wordwall. If you don’t see a particular add-on within Classroom, email your admin to ask if your district can set up that add-on, or give feedback within Classroom to request new add-ons partners that aren’t on this list.
