New G Suite OAuth API activity reporting now available

What’s changing

We’ve added a new event to the OAuth Token Audit Activity Events in the Reports API and Reports section of the Admin console. This new event is called “Activity,” and it shows how second- and third-party apps are using the G Suite OAuth API tokens they’ve been granted. This event is in addition to the previously available Authorize and Revoke events.

We’ve also added a new parameter—called “Scope_data”—to both the Authorize and Revoke events, which allows you to filter logs based on which OAuth scope and product bucket was granted.

Who’s impacted

Admins only

Why you’d use it

The new Activity event allows you to see which methods are being called by second- and third-party apps on behalf of users via OAuth grants, removing some of the guesswork that previously existed around OAuth exposure. The Scope_data parameter allows you to filter Authorize and Revoke activity based on the specific scope that was granted.

How to get started

Additional details

The “Activity” event is triggered when a second- or third-party application calls a Google Product API using the OAuth protocol on behalf of one of your users. If your organization uses multiple second- or third-party apps, you may see a large increase in event traffic.

Compare G Suite adoption and use between organizational units

We’re adding the ability to view and filter G Suite reports by organizational unit (OU) in the Admin console and the Reports API. This information can make it easier to build more insightful reports and more complete audits.

You could use this to:

  • Compare G Suite usage across OUs - You can drill down to see metrics such as drive storage, active users, and more at an OU level, helping you to measure and track G Suite usage in different areas of your organization.
  • Improve your investigation efficiency - You can view Audit logs for a particular unit within the company, which can help filter out unrelated events and focus your investigation efforts.

View data by OU in the Admin console

To view a report or audit for a specific OU in the Admin console, filter using the left-hand menu. See our Help Center to learn more about account activity logs.

View data by OU through the Reports API

When you use the Reports API, outputs will include OU information. You can use this to report on and analyze by OU. Find out more about how to use the Reports API.

Reminder: Absolute metrics removed from Admin console Reports API on 5/29

As a reminder, we’re removing some Drive metrics from the Admin console Reports API starting May 29th, 2018. Specifically, we’re removing absolute count metrics, which have been replaced by activity based metrics. This was announced a year ago, and the Admin console user interface was updated in October. The old metrics will no longer be available through the Reports API from May 29th.

Hangouts Meet metrics in Reports API; tablet support now available

Hangouts Meet helps you connect with your team from anywhere with easy-to-join video calls. We’re introducing new features to help you and your teams maximize how they collaborate.

Hangouts Meet metrics added to G Suite Reports API

To help you better understand Hangouts Meet usage within your domain, we’re introducing more than 50 new metrics in the Reports API Customer Usage report. These new metrics provide details on the duration, size, and device-specific characteristics of the Meet calls across your organization.

This will give you insights on how to improve your organization’s collaboration and productivity with Meet. You can learn more about the new metrics and how you can use them here.

All Hangouts-related metrics that were previously provided under the Google+ metrics group have been migrated to a newly introduced metrics group called Meet. You can learn more about the migration to the new Meet metrics here.

Hangouts Meet supported on tablets

You can now use Hangouts Meet on your Android and iOS tablets. This will help your team members join meetings from any of their devices.

Better Google Drive auditing and reporting in the Admin console and Reports API

To help Google Apps admins monitor and analyze their organizations’ Google Drive content, we offer audit logs in the Reports > Audit > Drive section of the Admin console, as well as via the Reports API. Today’s launch brings the following improvements to that reporting, making it even more useful for you:

  • If a user outside of your domain views or takes action on a document explicitly shared with them (as an individual or as part of a specific group), we will now show that event and that user’s details. Previously, this would be recorded as an anonymous user event.
  • If a user outside of your domain takes action on a document shared with the public via link sharing, we will now show that event in the audit logs as an anonymous user edit event. Previously, only anonymous user views were recorded.
  • In addition to the customer usage and user usage reports already in the Reports API, we will now show aggregated statistics around user behavior, like creating, editing, viewing, and trashing. These new metrics will only be accessible via the Reports API.

Please note that the features above are only available to customers with Google Apps Unlimited and Google Apps for Education.

New metrics on Hangouts and changes to Google+ activity metrics

We are pleased to announce that we are adding new Hangouts metrics to the Reports API (part of the Admin SDK). These new metrics can be used to track video calls by platform. The new metrics that are being added are listed below:

  • gplus.num_video_calls_android
  • gplus.num_video_calls_cfm
  • gplus.num_video_calls_ios
  • gplus.num_video_calls_web
  • gplus.total_video_call_minutes_android
  • gplus.total_video_call_minutes_cfm
  • gplus.total_video_call_minutes_ios
  • gplus.total_video_call_minutes_web
  • gplus.num_video_conferences_android
  • gplus.num_video_conferences_cfm
  • gplus.num_video_conferences_ios
  • gplus.num_video_conferences_mobile
  • gplus.num_video_conferences_web

In addition, Apps admins may notice a change in numbers for Google+ active users. A number of Google+ components and integrations (Hangouts, YouTube Comments, and Photos, for example) have been unbundled from the core Google+ product. The new metrics reflect users of Google+ only. Google+ activity metrics that are impacted with this change are below:
  • gplus.num_1day_active_users
  • gplus.num_7day_active_users
  • gplus.num_30day_active_users
The above changes will be rolled out starting today to all Google Apps domains. To find out more on these new metrics, check our updated developer documentation.
