Find, approve, and install apps that work with Android for Work even more easily

The Google Apps Marketplace offers hundreds of quality enterprise apps that admins can install for their domains, enhancing their employees’ native Google for Work apps with additional functionality and features. We’re now making it easier for admins to determine the apps on the Google Apps Marketplace that work with Android for Work and that can be installed on their end users’ Android devices.

If you are logged in as an Apps for Work admin and visit the Google Apps Marketplace, you’ll now see an Available on Android for Work section that features a select number of apps and links directly to their Google Play for Work counterparts. This initial group of apps will also be easily identifiable via an Android icon in the Available on section of their public listings on the Marketplace.

If your organization has Android for Work enabled and you install one of these Available on Android for Work apps for your domain, you’ll be given the option to visit the Play for Work store, where you can approve the corresponding Android app and begin deploying it to your users. This will allow your employees to get started using native mobile apps more quickly and easily.

In conjunction with the changes described above, we’re also making it simpler to identify apps that work with Google Apps in the Play for Work store. Going forward, if you’re logged in as an Apps admin and visit the Play for Work store, select listings for apps that work with Google Apps will be marked Works with Google Apps and link to their Marketplace counterparts. If you have Android for Work enabled and approve one of those apps, you’ll be given the option to navigate directly to that counterpart on the Marketplace and install it for your domain.

In addition, much like on the Marketplace, the Play for Work store will now display a Works with Google Apps section on its homepage. This section will allow you to quickly identify those Play for Work apps that have a Marketplace counterpart.

Initially, only a small group of apps will be featured in these Available on Android for Work and Works with Google Apps sections, though we’re looking to add more apps in the future.

Strengthening the Google Apps ecosystem

The promise of the cloud is to make businesses more effective, more mobile and more secure. Today, more than 2 million paying businesses have chosen Google Apps for Work to advance communication, collaboration and productivity across work teams. In addition to all the goodness that Google Apps offers, many businesses look to the cloud for things like customer relationship management and telephony tools. Through our relationships with Google for Work Technology Partners, today we'll start recommending applications that help our customers get the most out of the cloud.

Great apps, recommended by Google

When we launched Google Apps in 2006, there weren’t many cloud apps on the market. Today, almost 10 years later, cloud software options abound. In some cases, this can make deciding on the right solution harder for customers. It can be difficult to assess which apps are secure, reliable, high-performing and well-integrated with the tools customers use most. And many businesses have neither the time nor the capability to do this assessment across all of the apps they might consider. To make this journey easier for our customers, Google will begin recommending apps from other providers. These apps are reviewed by Google and an independent third-party security firm to make sure that these solutions are safe and reliable, and meet our requirements for high quality integrations. An example is Smartsheet Project Management, which seamlessly integrates with Google Calendar, Gmail, Drive and Single Sign-On to deliver a great user experience, while meeting the security and integration requirements of a robust web solution.

The initial set of applications being added to the Recommended for Google Apps for Work program includes:

This list will continue to grow as we review and add more apps.

Updates to the Google Apps Marketplace

The Google Apps Marketplace carries hundred of apps, including those that we’ve reviewed and recommended. These apps have been installed hundreds of millions of times by Google Apps customers. We recently updated the Google Apps Marketplace to make it easier for employees to find the right apps and added new notifications to let employees know when they have access to apps that just became available. To make it even easier to get your favorite apps on all of your devices, we’ll begin to feature a number of apps that also have Android mobile versions, with links to their Google Play for Work counterparts.

These updates will help Google Apps for Work customers find the best apps for their needs, while making it simpler for employees to use any app on any device.

Google Apps Marketplace gets a fresh new look

Posted by, Chris Han, Product Manager Google Apps Marketplace

The Google Apps Marketplace brings together hundreds of third-party applications that integrate with and enhance Google Apps for Work. It’s a great place to get discovered by more than five million Google Apps customers. Many of these customers depend on Google Apps Marketplace to find the solutions their organizations need, driving millions of users to the top listed apps.

Today, we’ve launched a brand new Google Apps Marketplace site aimed to improving discoverability and getting your app installed by even more customers. No need to do anything if you’ve already listed your app publicly on Google Apps Marketplace. Your app will appear on the new site automatically.

If you haven’t listed your app yet on Google Apps Marketplace, follow these instructions to get started!

A brand new Google Apps Marketplace

The right tools help organizations succeed. The Google Apps Marketplace makes it easy for admins and employees to find these tools by offering hundreds of third-party applications that integrate directly into Google Apps for Work. Today, we’re revealing a brand new site for the Google Apps Marketplace that makes this process even simpler. A new home page highlights the most popular apps, new arrivals, and more, while search functionality and the navigation bar make it easy for users to find the apps they need.

Check out the new site at apps.google.com/marketplace. A few things to keep in mind:

  • If you’ve disabled the installation of some or all third-party Marketplace apps for your employees (in the Admin console under Apps > Marketplace apps > Settings for Marketplace apps), they will not be able to install those applications from the new Marketplace.
  • End users can only see end-user apps in the Marketplace; admins can see both admin-specific and end-user apps in the Marketplace. If you want to access admin-specific apps, please be sure that you’re signed in with your Apps admin account .

Docs, Sheets and Forms add-ons now open to all developers

Posted by Saurabh Gupta, Product Manager

Originally posted to Google Developers blog

Back in 2014, we introduced add-ons for Google Docs, Sheets, and Forms in developer preview. Since then, the developer community has built a wide variety of features to help millions of Docs, Sheets and Forms users become more productive. Over the last few months, we launched a number of developer-friendly features that made it easier to build, test, deploy and distribute add-ons. Some key capabilities include:

With these features under our belt, we are ready to graduate add-ons out of developer preview. Starting today, any developer can publish an add-on. To ensure users find the best tools for them, every new add-on will undergo a review for adherence to our guidelines before it’s available in the add-ons store.

We can’t wait to see what you will build!

Introducing New Post Install Notification and Experience for Google Apps Marketplace

Today we’re announcing two changes to the post install experience for Google Apps Marketplace. Both changes are geared towards improving end user awareness and active usage of your apps.

First, after installing a Marketplace app, admins will be given the opportunity to send a notification to end users. This enables admins to easily tell users that your app is now available, and how to access it.

The notification will only appear to the users in the Organizational Unit (OU) or domain for which the admin has installed the app. The notification will appear in each user’s Notification Center and will describe how to access and launch the app.

Second, we’ve completely changed the post install experience itself, making instructions for accessing your app clearer. During the post install experience, we now show how to access all the extension points of your app (e.g. Apps launcher, Drive, Add-ons to Docs, Sheets, and Forms).

For more information on this feature, please see the Help Center article.

Enhanced add-ons experience for Google Apps admins

Last year we launched add-ons, tools created by developer partners that provide even more helpful features in your documents, spreadsheets and forms. Previously, the ability to install add-ons was controlled centrally by Google Apps admins in the Admin console, but users retained ultimate control of choosing which individual add-ons to install or remove.

Today we’re releasing a couple of updates to help developers share their add-ons with an even wider audience and give Google Apps admins more consistent control over which add-ons are used in their organizations.

Developers can now choose to make their add-ons for Docs, Sheets and Forms available for installation across entire domains, which automatically creates a Google Apps Marketplace listing that is easy for customers to find. Admins can then install these handy add-ons for their whole organization using just a couple of clicks.

Admins will continue to have a “disable add-ons” option for their users, but they can also whitelist add-ons via the Google Apps Marketplace for their entire domain or a specific team. Check out the Help Center for details on the available options.

Keep in mind that it will take some time for add-on developers to publish their apps for domain-wide installation, so you might not find all your favorite add-ons in the Apps Marketplace yet.

Note: this launch will not impact existing add-on installation settings.
