Expanding branding and customization capabilities to Google Sites

What’s changing

Last month, we introduced the expanded branding and customization capabilities in Google Slides and Google Forms. Today, we’re excited to announce that you can now easily and quickly create with high-quality, pre-designed themes for Google Sites as well.

Once an admin distributes branded materials to users in their organization, they will have access to a consistent set of design elements that align with your company branding. This includes fonts, branded colors, logo(s), a header image, and other theme settings like custom site width and page frames that users can employ when creating a new site or editing an existing site.

Evolving collaboration in Google Chat with smart chips

This announcement is part of Google Cloud Next ‘23. Visit the Workspace Blog to learn more about the new Google Chat.

What’s changing

In 2021, we launched smart canvas to drive the next era of collaboration in Google Workspace. Since then, we’ve added numerous smart chips to Google Docs and Sheets that enable you to preview and access rich, context-setting information and files within your documents and spreadsheets. Today, we’re excited to announce smart chips in Google Chat on web.

When composing a message in Chat, typing “@” will now display a list of suggestions for files to include as smart chips. You can search files by typing the name of the file, and the results will be based on files you’ve used most recently. Once a file is selected, you can insert it directly into your message.

Who’s impacted

End users

Why you’d use it

Many people take a number of collaborative actions in Chat so they can get work done faster. For example, you may share project files in a direct message or space to gather quick feedback from stakeholders.

This feature reduces friction for senders by eliminating the need to separately find files within Drive and then copy/paste them into a Chat message. Now, users can send files as smart chips so they are compact and readable in a message, without leaving Chat.

Additional details

An in-line preview of the file chip will be shown while composing the message, similar to when pasting the URL of the file into Chat. This can be removed by clicking on the dismiss button before sending the message or at any point when editing the message.

Getting started

  • Admins: There is no admin control for this feature.
  • End users: In Google Chat on web, type “@” followed by a file name to search for a file and insert it directly into a message. Visit the Help Center to learn more about sending & sharing files in Google Chat
    • Note: Mobile users can receive and click on smart chips, but cannot insert them on the Chat mobile app at this time.

Google Fiber expands to Murfreesboro, Tennessee

It’s already been a busy summer for Google Fiber in Middle Tennessee with big announcements in Franklin and Smyrna — and it’s getting even hotter. Today, the Murfreesboro City Council approved a license agreement which will enable us to bring fast, reliable internet to one of the fastest growing cities in the country.

Our engineering team is getting to work on network design, which is the first step in our construction process, and we’ll be working closely with the City of Murfreesboro on permitting throughout the project. We expect to kick off construction early in 2024 and plan to serve our first customers in Murfreesboro later in the year. Residents who are interested in staying up to date on the construction process and service availability can sign up here

Thank you to the Mayor and City Council for their leadership. They had a clear vision of ensuring access to high speed internet for residents and local businesses. Google Fiber is looking forward to being a part of Murfreesboro’s connected future.

Supporting the 2023 New Zealand General Election

Image: Google Doodle for Election Day

Come October 2023, New Zealanders will take to the polls to vote in the General Election to decide who we want to represent us and our communities in Parliament.

To support the democratic process, Google is bringing more openness to election advertising online, and helping connect people to useful and relevant election-related information. Here is how we will be providing support:

Helping voters find the information they need

In the build-up to elections, people need helpful and authoritative information to help them navigate the electoral process. For the New Zealand election in 2023, we will make electoral information from the Election Commission and other authoritative sources - such as how to vote and where to vote - easily discoverable on Search and YouTube.

Google News Lab will continue to publish the latest Search Trends related to the Election, across politicians, policies and parties, to support newsrooms with their coverage of the election period. In addition to the bespoke microsite, News Lab will be issuing weekly Trends Alerts from the beginning of September to highlight the areas that Kiwis are interested in, which anyone can sign up for here

Helping people better understand the election advertising they see

Google’s goal has always been to support election integrity by providing transparency into the political advertising spend on our platforms. For the second time during our local General Election a publicly accessible Transparency Report is live, showing election ads run by verified advertisers. Our goal is to make this information as accessible and useful as possible to citizens, practitioners, and researchers. We're working with political parties to help them understand digital best practices and will be sharing Google's ads policies with parties and candidates.

On YouTube, we have expanded information panels giving topical context in New Zealand and across the region. Now, when Kiwis search videos on certain topics prone to misinformation, they’ll see an information panel at the top of their search results or under a video they’re watching which includes links to additional info and context from authoritative third-party sources.

Helping to build media literacy with the Google News Initiative

We help voters find reliable, useful election-related information online and we also work hard to prevent election interference by being on the front foot and educating stakeholders on how to spot disinformation through media literacy programmes.

As part of our ongoing commitment to the New Zealand media industry we partnered with CrossCheck at RMIT FactLab to launch RMIT Fact Lab Workshops. These immersive and interactive trainings help newsrooms and community media learn skills to analyse online information during the Election period.

In addition, we have partnered with Squiz Kids, a daily news podcast for school children, designed to teach students how to recognize online fact from fiction through a plug-and-play teaching resource.

Our mission is to make the world’s information accessible and useful, and during this election period, we want to surface the facts and help audiences get more context on information they find online. We will continue to invest in initiatives that build further on our commitment towards election transparency, and we are grateful for our partners, and the work we do together in this space.
