Google Workspace Updates Weekly Recap – June 21, 2024

Now generally available: Build AppSheet automations using Google Forms 
AppSheet helps users automate manual workflows by integrating with data sources like Google Drive, Chat and Sheets, and earlier this year we announced its integration with Google Forms in beta. The ability to add and remove Google Groups as space members using the Google Chat API is now generally available 
Last year, we announced the ability to create spaces, memberships, group chats, and more using the Google Chat API. This week, we’re excited to introduce the option for developers to add and remove Google Groups as space members using the Google Chat API. | Rolling out now to Rapid Release domains and Scheduled Release domains. | Available to all Google Workspace customers. | Learn more about accessing Chat APIs through the Google Chat API. 


Comments and action items in client-side encrypted Google Docs is now generally available 
You can now collaborate with others on client-side encrypted Google Docs to add, edit, reply, filter, or delete comments. You can also assign action items to yourself or others. External users can now securely collaborate on client-side encrypted files 
We’re expanding visitor sharing, a feature that provides secure, pincode-based collaboration over sensitive data with people, to include client-side encrypted files. Create interactive YouTube assignments in Google Classroom more quickly and efficiently, with the help of AI 
We’re introducing AI-suggested questions that educators can easily attach to a video based on its content when creating interactive YouTube assignments in Google Classroom. | Learn more about YouTube assignments in Classroom.

Google Meet adds 52 new languages to translated captions and 11 more languages for closed captions 
For all Google Workspace customers and users with personal accounts, we’ve expanded support for closed captioning. Improved syncing experience between Google Calendar and third-party calendars

Earlier this year, we introduced the option to create discoverable spaces using the Google Chat API through the Google Workspace Developer Preview Program. Updated design for meeting controls in Google Meet

Google Classroom now supports grade category and co-teacher imports from SIS partners
Starting this week, teachers can now import their grade categories and co-teachers from their linked SIS. | Learn more about import grading categories or co-teachers. 

Google Meet now supports high definition video for meeting recording and devices 
Full HD video content is now available for recorded meetings and sending full HD video is now available on all computers with 1080p cameras. Learn more about new video support in Meet.

Switch between edit, view and comment mode in Google Slides 
We’re making it easier for you to switch between different modes in Google Slides. For example, if you’d like to hide comments within a presentation or avoid accidental edits, you can switch to view mode. Choosing commenting mode hides all options associated with editing, but still allows you to read and add comments. When you’re presenting in Google Meet, you can now scroll and zoom in or out on your content directly from Meet. If you’re joining a live stream from the Google Meet Android or iOS app, you can now use interactive features such as reactions, Q&A, and polls when they’re available. Gemini for Workspace usage reports are now available in Admin console 
We’ve introduced Gemini for Workspace usage reports in the Admin console. This report gives admins an overarching view of how Gemini is being used in their organization, specifically: assigned Gemini licenses, active Gemini users, and the number of users who are using Gemini over time. | Learn more about Gemini usage reports. 

The Calendar API now distinguishes events created from Gmail 
The Calendar API will distinguish events created from Gmail. New and existing events from Gmail that are scheduled for a future date will: 1) appear with a new event Type “fromGmail” instead of “default”, 2) include the email recipient as the organizer instead of “[email protected]” and 3) new “fromGmail” filters for both Events.list and Events.watch will be available. | Learn more about the Calendar API.

Expanding row limits in Connected Sheets for BigQuery 
Last year, we increased the maximum number of rows of results returned from BigQuery to 50,000 for pivot tables and data extracts. This week, we’re excited to announce this has been expanded to 100,000 rows for pivot tables and 500,000 rows for extracts (with a cell limit of 5 million). Custom text fields are now available for eSignature in Google Docs and Google Drive 
You can now input custom text fields when using eSignature. Filter, sort, and display your Google Meet hardware devices by product service status 
You can currently filter, sort, and display your Google Meet hardware devices by whether they are online, offline, or experiencing an application load-failure. Introducing adaptive audio in Google Meet: creating ad-hoc meeting spaces with multiple laptops

Send emails to spaces in Google Chat 
After a space manager generates an email address for a space, members (or anyone in your domain with the email address) can send or forward any email to that space. This provides a great way for teams to easily triage or discuss email content with stakeholders within the space. Manage spaces at scale with new Chat API functionality 
We are pleased to announce the launch for additional features of Chat API via the Developer Preview Program, enabling space management at scale on behalf of admin users. Introducing Gemini offerings for Google Workspace for Education customers

Expanding voice typing and automatic captions to additional browsers 
We’re expanding support for voice typing and captions features to additional browsers, such as Edge and Safari. Google Drive’s Activity page shows pending access requests, recent comments, and approvals for files, allowing you to quickly view recent activity and take action, all in one place. Hover to preview videos in Google Drive 
We’re introducing a new feature that lets you quickly preview videos in Drive in List mode by simply hovering your mouse over their thumbnail. Upon hovering, the video will start to play automatically and clicking on the video will open it in full-screen. We’re simplifying how users turn on 2-Step Verification (2SV), which will streamline the process, and make it easier for admins to enforce 2SV policies in their organizations. | Learn more about adding 2-Step Verification (2SV) methods. 

Block compromised mobile devices using context-aware access 
Using context-aware access, you now have the option to automatically block access to Google Workspace data from compromised Android and iOS devices. A device may be counted as compromised if certain unusual events are detected, including devices that are jailbroken, bypassing of security controls, modification of restricted settings, and more. | Learn more about compromised mobile devices. 

Improving suspension alerting for Google Meet hardware devices

Easily convert data to dropdown chips in Google Sheets 
We’re adding a new feature that helps you quickly convert ranges of data into dropdown chips in bulk. If you have a column of data that includes a variety of data values (e.g., different project statuses like on track, paused, completed), Sheets will show a “Convert to dropdown chips” suggestion when you click into your data range. | Learn more about dropdown chips in Sheets. 

New ways to quickly format and organize data with tables in Google Sheets 
We’re excited to announce tables in Google Sheets, which helps you simplify and accelerate spreadsheet building by bringing format and structure to unorganized ranges. | Learn more about tables in sheets. 

Breakout room information is now included in Google Meet attendance reports 
We’re now including breakout room attendance as part of attendance reporting in Google Meet. Attendance reports help meeting organizers keep track of who attended their meetings and for how long, which can be challenging during larger meetings or while presenting. | Learn more about breakout room information. 

Set the default camera framing option for Google Meet hardware devices, and other framing updates 
We’re introducing several updates around framing controls for Google Meet hardware devices: 1) an admin setting which will allow admins to choose a default framing option for their meeting spaces, 2) framing support on whiteboards (Series One Desk 27 and Board 65) and remote controlled only Google Meet hardware devices, 3) a few small adjustments to how camera framing settings appear on hardware devices. | Learn more about framing updates for Meet hardware devices. 

Get notifications for all messages in a Google Chat space 
For conversations that require a higher level of attention, we’re introducing a new “notify all” functionality for in-line threaded spaces. If this option is selected, you will be notified of all new messages in the space. This includes receiving notifications for all @ mentions, threads followed, and even threads that you do not follow, allowing you to stay on top of everything happening in a conversation. | Learn more about notifications in Google Chat.

Updated keyboard shortcuts and first-letters navigation now available on Google Drive web 
First-letters navigation enables users to quickly and easily navigate a list of items in Drive via keypress. Users can move focus within a file list in Drive by pressing the first letter(s) of the file's name. Pressing the same letter again will navigate to the next item starting with that letter. | Learn more about first-letter navigation.


Configure managed iOS apps for your users’ using Google Mobile Device Management 
Directly from the Admin console, admins can remotely set custom configs for managed iOS apps on end-user devices for their enterprise using Google Mobile Device Management. Managed configurations are applied using XML property lists and the same app can be configured differently across different domains, groups, or organizational units (OUs). | Learn more about configuring managed iOS apps for users. 


Available in open beta: Build AppSheet automations using Google Forms 
We’re introducing an integration between AppSheet and Google Forms. With this update, Google Forms submissions can act as event triggers within AppSheet Automations. These automations can then take many different actions, such as sending notifications or approval requests to Gmail or Google Chat, or even calling a custom Apps Script function. | Learn more about AppSheet automations using Google Forms.


Google Meet increases support for ultra-low latency live streaming to the first 25,000 viewers 
For Google Workspace editions that support 100,000 viewers, we’re increasing the availability of the Google Meet ultra-low latency viewing experience for live streamed meetings from the first 10,000 viewers to the first 25,000 viewers. All additional viewers will have the standard live streaming experience. Introducing AppSheet Organizations 
We’re making it easier to manage your AppSheet users with the introduction of AppSheet Organizations. Hide tiles without video during Google Meet calls 
We’ve added the option to hide non-video tiles, so that users can avoid clutter on their screen if they are interested to only see the participants with their videos on. Unless otherwise indicated, the features below are available to all Google Workspace customers, and are fully launched or in the process of rolling out. Customizable Home tab for Google Chat apps 
Recently, we announced the availability of the "Home" tab for Google Chat apps through the Google Workspace Developer Preview Program. This feature allows developers to create a new tab in their Chat apps, known as “App Home”. App home can be customized to display user-specific dashboards, a list of open items and tasks, and more. Create Looker Studio reports from Google Sheets 
Looker Studio enables users to quickly build interactive reports and dashboards, and starting today they can now be created directly from Google Sheets. More specifically, users can: 
  • Pick which sheet or cell range to use in the generated report on Looker Studio. 
  • Transform the data in Sheets to an automatically generated Looker Studio report in a single click, and save and share the report with an individual or a team.

Export Gemini data for users in your organization 
Super admins can now export all of their users Gemini data, including prompts and Gemini’s responses to those prompts. You can now opt-in to receive email or text message notifications when application load failures occur. Workspace Data Protection rules are now available for Gmail in Beta
Launching first to beta, we’re introducing data loss prevention rules for Gmail. We’ve introduced annotation tools in Google Meet. Presenters and their appointed co-annotators can use these tools to highlight content or make other notations over presented content. Google Chat apps can now subscribe to event notifications 
Google Workspace developers registered in our Developer Preview Program have been able to build Chat apps that can subscribe to Chat events using the Google Workspace Events API. Now generally available: Chat interoperability between Google Chat and other messaging platforms 
At Google Cloud Next 2023, we announced interoperability between Google Chat, Microsoft Teams and Slack— powered by Mio and previously available to Workspace customers through a Beta program.
