Edit and open jams on Jamboard more easily

What’s changing

We’re making some updates to Jamboard to make it easier to jam on all your devices. Specifically you may notice:

  • An improved editing experience on Jamboard devices, including a redesigned toolbar and framebar, a new quick-access menu, and new gestures to select objects.
  • Simpler ways to open jams from your computer or on Jamboard devices.

See below for more details, or see our Help Center for the full list of changes. You can also use this guide to learn how to use Jamboard, including the new features outlined in this post.

Who’s impacted

End users

Why you’d use it

These updates will make it easier for all users to visualize their ideas and collaborate through jams. This should help unlock your team’s creative potential by bringing more ideas together on a range of platforms, and making it easier to continue jamming in later meetings, brainstorms, and working sessions.

How to get started

Additional details

Use this guide to get more details and learn how to use the toolbar, framebar, and other new features outlined in this post.

An improved editing experience on Jamboard devices

  • An updated toolbar on Jamboard devices features new and rearranged options, which make it easier to find and use popular editing controls including undo/redo, text colors, and more.
  • The framebar has been redesigned. Tap the frame icon at the top of the Jamboard, and an expanded view of the frames in your jam will make it easy to move between frames.
  • You can quick-select an object by tapping it with two fingers, rather than long-pressing as you would have before. This was changed in response to strong user feedback that it was too easy to accidentally lift objects while writing on them.
  • A new overflow menu will make it easier to find more editing functions when you have an object selected.

Updated toolbar and framebar on Jamboard devices

Simpler ways to open jams from your computer or on Jamboard devices

  • You can now use your computer to easily open a jam on a Jamboard using the Jamboard name. Simply open the jam on your computer, click “Open on a Jamboard,” then search by Jamboard name. To make this easier, we added the name of the Jamboard to the screensaver on Jamboard devices so it’s quick to open jams when you’re in sight of a Jamboard. See below for more details on how this works.
  • You can no longer share a Jam by creating a share-code from your computer. Instead, you can share a jam using the standard G Suite Share button, and you can open Jams on Jamboard using the search by Jamboard name feature described above.
  • We’ve updated the ‘open a jam’ instructions in the main menu on Jamboard devices. The new instructions make it easier to use the search, nearby, and code options to open a jam. See our Help Center for more information on how to open an existing jam on Jamboard.

Choose your videoconferencing option on Jamboard by June 30

What’s changing

Starting on May 13th, you can choose whether or not to enable an enhanced Jamboard videoconferencing experience with Hangouts Meet on Jamboard devices. If you don't configure your boards to enable or disable this feature by June 30th, your boards will be automatically enabled. The improved experience replaces the current “Connect to Meeting” feature to:

  • Add full screen videoconferencing to Jamboards: Jamboard will use Hangouts Meet for a better videoconference experience.
  • Pair to a calendar: Pair your board to a calendar resource in the admin console to make it a bookable resource and make it easier to start or join a meeting directly from the board.

For Jamboards in large rooms or open spaces, we recommend setting up the Jamboard with peripherals to provide the best audio quality. Review our deployment recommendations and information below to make sure you provide your users with the best experience.

Who’s impacted

Admins and end users

Why you’d use it

The enhanced Jamboard videoconferencing will use Hangouts Meet to expand how you can use your Jamboards. Now, you can have a video conferencing call, a collaborative session with the digital whiteboard, or both at once—all with a single Jamboard. Specifically, Meet on Jamboard will:

  • Add full screen videoconferencing for when you want to talk to meeting participants
  • Make it easy to switch between videoconferencing and sharing the digital whiteboard
  • Improve screen sharing from other devices to a Jamboard so you can present to the meeting
  • Allow pairing a Jamboard to a calendar resource to easily start or join a meeting directly from the board.

How to get started

Additional details

Choose whether to enable the feature on your Jamboards by June 30

By June 30, Admins should choose which configuration to use for each Jamboard and ensure that the Jamboards are properly deployed within your organization for optimal video meeting experience (deployment recommendations).

  • If you enable full screen videoconferencing, the feature will be enabled immediately on the board.
  • If you turn it off, the feature will not be enabled, but can be enabled any time in the future.
  • If you decide to pair the Jamboard with a Hangouts Meet hardware device, you will be able to use both Jamboard and Hangouts Meet hardware in the same room.

To opt-in for this videoconferencing update on your Jamboard, please log on to admin console and manually enable the upgrade. If no option is selected before June 30, all boards that are not currently paired to Hangouts Meet devices will auto-upgrade.

Turn the feature on or off at any time
You can enable or disable videoconferencing or change pairing set-ups for each Jamboard at any time. If you choose to disable the upgrade now, you can still enable it at any time in the future to rollout the feature on your own timeline.

Use Vault for Gmail confidential messages and Jamboard files

What’s changing

Google Vault is adding support for two new types of content:

  • Gmail confidential mode emails - If your users send or receive messages in Gmail confidential mode (currently available for G Suite as a beta program,) Vault will retain, preserve, search and export confidential mode messages as per the details below.
  • Jamboard files stored in Google Drive - Vault will automatically retain and preserve Jamboard files (‘jams”) according to the retention rules and holds set for Google Drive, and let you search and export these files.

Who’s impacted

Admins only

Why you’d use it

Google Vault lets you retain, hold, search, and export data to support your organization’s retention and eDiscovery needs. This launch adds support for new data types so that you can comprehensively govern your organization’s data.

How to get started

Additional details

Support for Gmail confidential mode emails
Gmail confidential mode lets users restrict recipients' access to sensitive email content. This feature is available to G Suite domains through our Gmail confidential Beta program.

Vault and confidential messages sent by members of your organization - Vault can hold, retain, search, and export all confidential mode messages sent by users in your organization. Messages are always available to Vault, even when the sender sets an expiration date or revokes recipients' access to confidential messages.

Here’s an example of what [email protected] will see in Vault when they search for [email protected] and preview this email sent by [email protected].

Vault and confidential messages received from external senders - Your users might receive confidential mode messages from external parties such as other G Suite customers and from personal Gmail accounts. You can hold, retain, search and export message headers and subjects of external confidential messages. However, you can't search or export message content or attachments from external confidential messages.

Here’s an example of what [email protected] will see in Vault when they search for [email protected], and preview this email sent by an external domain ([email protected]).

See our Help Center for more information on Vault and Gmail confidential mode. You can also see how to protect Gmail messages with confidential mode.

Support for Jamboard files (“jams”) stored in Google Drive

With this launch, you’ll be able to manage Jamboard files that have been saved to a user’s Google Drive:

  • Retain Jamboard data through Vault with the same retention rules that you set for Google Drive. All your retention rules set for Drive will automatically apply to jams in Drive.
  • Preserve Jamboard data through Drive holds.
  • Search for Jamboard data in Vault, alongside other Drive files, or only search Jamboard files with the “type:jam” search operator. You can also preview jams and export them.

See our Help Center for to see how to set retention rules for Drive, which will also apply to jams.

Get your whole team jamming with Jamboard web improvements

What’s changing

We’re adding several new features to Jamboard which will make it easier to create and collaborate on jams on the web. We recently announced that you can now create and edit jams in a Chrome browser. We’re enhancing this web-based Jamboard experience with several useful features including:

  • Support for familiar keyboard shortcuts: Use Ctrl/CMD+c to copy, CTRL+V to paste, and CTRL+D to duplicate Jam objects when editing on the web.
  • Create, delete, and duplicate frames on the web: Easily manage frames (the equivalent of pages in jams) on the web.
  • Easier switch between creation modes: Quickly switch between the drawing and selection modes - hold down Ctrl/CMD to switch to the select mode, and release to switch back to drawing mode.
  • Better image management: Add images to jams by drag and drop, copy and paste, or through a simple image upload dialog.
A new dialogue will make it easier to insert images in jams

Who’s impacted

End users

Why you’d use it

Jamboard is a great tool for brainstorming, encouraging collaboration, and generally bringing ideas to life. This launch makes it easier for everyone on your team to collaborate on jams, regardless of whether they’re by a physical Jamboard or not.

With these improvements to Jamboard on the web, and the pre-existing apps for phones and tablets, we hope more if your team can join in and share ideas, capture sticky notes, brainstorm, and much more.

New settings and connectivity logs improve Jamboard fleet management

We’re adding new Jamboard logs to the Admin console. These will give G Suite admins better visibility into the status of their Jamboards, as well as what actions have been taken on them. We hope this will help you better manage your fleet of Jamboards and better diagnose and fix any issues you have with them.

Easily access logs of Jamboard actions

Logs will be displayed with simple descriptions, and admins will be able to search within and filter these logs to quickly see important information about the status of their Jamboards. The logs will include:

  • Recent changes to Jamboard settings, such as device name, location, screensaver timeout, device updates, and more
  • For recent settings changes, who made the changes, as well as both the old and new value (where possible)

Following our previous announcement that we’ve moved Jamboard fleet management to the G Suite Admin console, these logs will be in the G Suite Admin console at Home > Reporting > Audit.

Pinpoint and fix Jamboard issues

This information can help admins:
Diagnose issues: For example, if a Jamboard is offline, an admin can review the logs to see when it went offline and see when the device was last rebooted. This can help you narrow down and fix the possible cause of the connectivity issues more quickly.

Save time: For example, if a Jamboard user reports an unhelpful change or is experiencing an issue, admins will be able to see when recent on-device settings were changed. This could help narrow down the issue and track admin actions taken for the board, which helps avoid duplicating any steps that have already been tried.

See our Help Center for more information on how to manage Jamboards.

Manage your Jamboard fleet directly from the Admin console

You can now manage your Jamboards, along with your users and other devices, all in one place. We’re moving Jamboard fleet management and administration into the Admin console under Device Management > Jamboards. This move creates a more consistent and intuitive resource management experience for G Suite admins.

This replaces the Jamboard Admin console, but all of its functionality to provision, deprovision, and see device health is still available and all of its settings will be preserved. We’ve also added new features like filtering for improved searching, pagination, and a refresh button.

Visit the Help Center for more information on viewing, modifying, and updating settings for your Jamboard in the Jamboard Admin console.

New ways to create, edit, and share your jams on the web with the latest Jamboard release

With this month’s release, we’ve added two highly requested features from customers that help you jam from anywhere and give you more control when sharing your work: creating and editing jams from the web and a “View Only” mode.

Create and edit your jams in a web browser

While users have always been able to view a jam from any device, editing and collaborating on a jam has been limited to touch devices (like the physical kiosk, tablets, and smartphones).

Now, you can create and edit your jams on the web too. With the new updates to the Jamboard web experience, everybody on your team can join in and collaborate on a session in their web browser. This means that anybody in the meeting can participate, whether they want to edit a sketch from a laptop or quickly type up sticky notes during a brainstorm.

We’ve found that this makes using and adopting Jamboard much easier for most teams and organizations.

Share and protect your work with View Only mode

Sometimes you want to share something to collaborate, but other times you want to share something that’s complete. Perhaps it’s an early brainstorm that you just want your manager to be able to view, or perhaps you’re a teacher sharing an assignment that you don’t want students to edit or change. With View Only mode, you can share something broadly but set exactly who has edit access.

The feature looks and works similarly to other G Suite apps like Docs, Sheets and Slides, so you have a consistent experience no matter what you’re creating and sharing.

For a full list of new features and improvements from this month’s release, check out the What’s New in Jamboard page in the Help Center.

Jamboard now available for purchase in Japan

Over the past year, we’ve announced that Jamboard, our cloud-based, collaborative whiteboard, is available for purchase in an ever-growing list of countries such as the United States, Canada, UK, select parts of Europe, and Australia. We’re now expanding that list further, bringing Jamboard to Japan.

G Suite customers in Japan can now purchase Jamboard for 640,000 JPY, which includes two styluses, an eraser, and a wall mount. See the table below for pricing.

Keep in mind that a G Suite license is required to use Jamboard so that you can access files from Drive, use them in your brainstorms, and come back to your work later.

G Suite customers based in Japan can contact their Google Cloud sales rep, our distributor, BenQ, or visit our website to learn more about how to start jamming with colleagues today.

Additional information about Jamboard
In addition to the Jamboard device, the Jamboard app is available on Android and iOS for all G Suite customers. When used on a tablet, the Jamboard app allows users to experience similar features as they would on the Jamboard device. On a smartphone, the app functions as a companion for the Jamboard device.

Usage of the Jamboard app and web viewer are controlled by a service on/off switch in the Admin console. This service switch is on by default.

Check out the Help Center for more information, including an FAQ section.

Draw on and claim jams from your mobile device with the latest Jamboard release

With this month’s release, we’ve added two new features specifically for Jamboard for mobile devices: drawing tools and the ability to claim jams using near-field communication (NFC).

Draw and edit jams from your mobile device
In the Jamboard mobile app, you can now:

  • Draw using Jamboard brushes
  • Use the color picker
  • Use the handwriting and shape recognition tools
  • Use laser pointer
  • Erase and clear board functions

Claim a jam using NFC-enabled mobile devices
Users can use NFC from their phones to take ownership of jams from a Jamboard or push their jams to the Jamboard using their mobile devices. They can simply tap to own or push a jam to Jamboard.

Updated Icons on the Jamboard device & apps
Toolbar icons on both the Jamboard device and mobile applications have been updated. It is important to note that the arrow that moves the toolbar from the left to the right edge of the Jamboard has been removed in this version.
