Generate fully editable charts using Gemini in Google Sheets

What’s changing

Earlier this year, we introduced the ability for Gemini to provide insights and generate charts based on your data in Google Sheets. At that time, the generated charts could only be inserted as static images over cells in a spreadsheet. Starting today, Gemini can produce fully editable charts that regenerate if the spreadsheet data changes.

To create a chart, click Gemini in Sheets and type in a prompt, such as “create a chart with date on the x-axis and total on the y-axis.” Gemini will produce a chart in the side panel of Sheets, and once you insert it, the chart will appear on a new tab. There, you’ll be able to edit all aspects of the chart, including title, colors, and more.

Why you’d use it

This functionality enables users to generate editable charts using Gemini in Sheets. For example:
  • A marketing manager analyzing campaign performance can ask "Create a bar chart showing campaign performance by market.”
  • A small business owner managing cash flow can ask "Create a line graph with my annual projects each month this year.”
  • A financial analyst investigating inventory trends can ask "create a pie chart showing the inventory amount breakdown from the past year.”

Additional details

  • Generated charts are tied to the data in the newly created tab, not to the originally analyzed data. Any changes you want to make to the data in the chart should be made in the new tab.
  • For the most accurate results, ensure your data is in a consistent format, with clear headers and no missing values.
  • When asking Gemini in Sheets to analyze your data, be as specific as possible in your prompts to ensure Gemini understands your request.
  • For complex analysis, Gemini in Sheets’ performance is most consistent in files below 1 million cells.
  • For certain chart types, Gemini in Sheets may still produce charts as images. Image charts are not directly editable or linked to your Sheet data, so they won't update automatically if your data changes.

Data regions support for Gemini features in Google Workspace is now available

What’s changing

Beginning today, Gemini features in Google Workspace apps, like Gemini in the side panel of Workspace apps or “Help me write” in Google Docs, for example, will now adhere to your organization’s data regionalization requirements. As with other data, Admins have the flexibility to configure controls for EU processing, US processing, or both, including granular settings down to the organizational unit (OU) level.

Who’s impacted

Admins

Why it matters

Data regions are critical for ensuring many customers can meet their own internal requirements, as well as other legal, regulatory, and data sovereignty requirements by controlling the geographical location of their data at rest. Expanding these controls to Gemini features in Google Workspace allows our customers to adopt Gemini features broadly in their organization with confidence  that their data is being processed and stored in the location they require.

New class analytics and insights for educators in Google Classroom

What’s changing

In 2023, we introduced a centralized view of Classroom analytics for teachers and education leaders. This analytics dashboard provides direct visibility into student performance and engagement in Google Classroom. Starting today, teachers can view this data via an “Analytics” tab on their class pages.

In addition, teachers will be able to see relevant insights on the class analytics page that alert them on how students are progressing and where they may need additional support. Here are a few examples:
  • 2 students haven't visited your class page in the last week
  • 3 students' grades increased over 25% since last month
  • 1 student turned in over half their assignments late in the last monthclass analytics
Richer insights about student engagement with assignments will also be surfaced directly on the Classwork page. Specifically, teachers can see the number of students who haven’t opened Drive files attached to assignments in Classroom. They can then follow up by sending a quick reminder to the class or individual students through private comments.
send a quick reminder to the class or individual students through private comments
This, along with our previously announced feature that shows the number of students who haven’t edited attachments, gives teachers a more comprehensive view of how students are progressing on assignments and provides them with the tools to provide timely reminders.

Who’s impacted

Admins and end users

Why you’d use it

Classroom analytics provide relevant insights that are immediately actionable, so education leaders and teachers can make informed decisions around how to best support student success.

Student engagement signals gives teachers visibility into student progress on academic work and helps them provide effective interventions to best support students.

Additional details

Insights will appear based on factors such as proximity to the due date of an assignment and when student activity, such as a scoring below 70%, is present.

Getting started

  • Admins:
    • Teachers will automatically be able to see class-level analytics for their classes.
    • Super Admins automatically have access to Classroom analytics and must designate education leaders with analytics data access and temporary class access to view the class analytics page.

Present content from camera in Google Meet

What’s changing

We’re introducing a new capability that lets users directly present content from their camera feed into a meeting, for example a document camera, video production tool, or an external camera. This is helpful for customers who utilize external production systems or other dedicated cameras to share video content during meetings, including:

  • Streaming produced video content (e.g., for town hall meetings).
  • Professional sharing live feeds from external video source (e.g. microscope, camera)
  • Educators presenting paper content using a document camera.

Additionally, Presenting content from a camera supports up to 1080p/30FPS.

Additional details

We're also introducing several improvements to the overall screen sharing functionality to make presenting smoother and more efficient:
  •  Starting any type of screen sharing (i.e. desktop, window or tab) is faster than before.
  • Additionally, video quality during screen sharing is sharper and provides better handling of dynamic scenes, such as scrolling text or video content.
  • To minimize disruptions, any previous presentation will now automatically resume if a second presenter stops sharing their screen.
  • We've also updated the user interface to make the screen sharing button larger and positioned more intuitively alongside other key controls, making it easier to find when you need it.
