Get more visual results when you shop on desktop

Shopping is about so much more than just buying — it’s also about browsing, researching and narrowing down your options to get the right product at the right price. It’s easy to take each of these steps on Google, thanks to our AI-enhanced Shopping Graph. The Shopping Graph now understands more than 35 billion product listings and can quickly organize shopping information online — making it much easier and more intuitive to find what you're looking for.

Last month we announced several new features coming to Google, including more visual ways to shop on mobile. And now, in the U.S., we’re bringing you a more visual shopping experience on desktop.

An animation of the search “shop ceramic vase” on desktop shows a more visual shopping results page, including product listings, articles with featured imagery and stores near you. The animation also clicks into the product listing of a ceramic vase shaped like a strawberry, which then opens a sidebar on the right hand side showing different merchants the product is available from and product reviews.

Whether you’re looking for clothes, electronics, beauty products or home goods on desktop, you’ll see a more visual feed of shopping results that includes products, brands, articles and videos from across the web. New dynamic filters will also help you refine your search to find something specific. So if you’re shopping for a new coffee maker on desktop, you can search “shop coffee makers” and filter by type, brand, retailer, nearby or on sale to find the best option. Our results and filters are dynamic so they'll update to show you the freshest content.

A search bar shows searches for “shop plant stands,” “shop mid century modern chairs” and “shop coffee makers.” Each search shows a page of shopping results with visuals of product listings.

You can also read up on products without interrupting your search. Just click a product to instantly see more details about it — like offers from different merchants and reviews — all without leaving your Search results page. Once you’ve found something you want, just click to go to the retailer’s site.

9 new features and tools for easier shopping on Google

Shopping isn’t just about buying. It’s also about exploring your options, discovering new styles and trends, and researching to make sure you’re getting the right product at the right price. Today at our annual Search On event, we announced nine new ways we're transforming the way you shop with Google, bringing you a more immersive, informed and personalized shopping experience.

Powering this experience is the Shopping Graph, our AI-enhanced model that now understands more than 35 billion product listings — up from 24 billion just last year.

Let's browse through all these new features and tools:

More visual ways to shop

1. Search with the word “shop”: Today we’re introducing a new way to unlock the shopping experience on Google. In the U.S., when you search the word shop” followed by whatever item you're looking for, you’ll access a visual feed of products, research tools and nearby inventory related to that product. We’re also expanding the shoppable search experience beyond apparel to all categories — from electronics to beauty — and more regions on mobile (and coming soon to desktop).

An animation of the Google search bar showing different search queries like “shop gloves.”

2. Shop the look: When you’re shopping for apparel on Google, you can now “shop the look” to help you easily assemble the perfect outfit. Say you’re looking for a new fall wardrobe staple, like a bomber jacket. The tool will show you images of bomber jackets and complementary pieces, plus options for where to buy them — all within Search.

An animation showing Google Shopping’s “shop the look” feature on a mobile device related to a search for “bomber jackets.” It scrolls through images, store options and prices.

3. See what’s trending: Trending products is a new feature in Search that shows you products that are popular right now within a category — helping you discover the latest models, styles and brands. U.S. shoppers will be able to shop the look and see trending products later this fall.

An animation showing Google Shopping’s “trending products” feature in Search on mobile. It scrolls through images and a section called “Trending now.”

4. Shop in 3D: People engage with 3D images almost 50% more than static ones. Earlier this year, we brought 3D visuals of home goods to Search. Soon you’ll find 3D visuals of shoes, starting with sneakers, as you search on Google. While many merchants already have 3D models available, we know creating these assets can be expensive and time consuming, often requiring hundreds of product photos and costly technology. So, to make this process more efficient and cost-effective, we’re announcing a new way to build 3D visuals. Thanks to our advancements in machine learning, we can now automate 360-degree spins of sneakers using just a handful of still photos (instead of hundreds). This new technology will be available in the coming months.

Tools to shop with confidence

5. Get help with complex purchases: It can be overwhelming to make certain purchases — you consider lots of factors, read tons of articles and open countless tabs on your browser. For those trickier decisions, the new buying guide feature shares helpful insights about a category from a wide range of trusted sources, all in one place. If you’re shopping for a mountain bike, for instance, the buying guide might show you information about size, suspension, weight and materials. With this information, you can research and make quicker decisions with confidence. Buying guide recently launched in the U.S., with new insight categories coming soon.

6. See what other shoppers think: Page insights will give you even more reason to shop with confidence. This new feature in the Google app brings together helpful context about a webpage you’re on or a product you’re researching, like its pros and cons and star ratings, all in one view. And to find the best deal, you can easily opt in to get price drop updates. Page insights will launch in the U.S. in the coming months.

More personal shopping experiences

7. Get personalized results: Soon you’ll see more personalized shopping results based on your previous shopping habits. You’ll also have the option to tell us your preferences directly, plus controls to easily turn off personalized results if you’d like. Here’s how it works: When you’re shopping on Google, just make your selections once — your preferred department and brands — to see more of each in the future. So if you select the “womens” department and the brand Cuyana, next time you’re shopping for something like a messenger bag, we’ll show you women’s messenger bags from Cuyana and similar brands. And if at any point you don’t want to see personalized results or your preferences change, you can easily adjust or turn off the feature by tapping the three dots next to a Search result via the About this result panel. Shopping personalization will roll out in the U.S. later this year.

8. Shop your way with new filters: Whole page shopping filters on Search are now dynamic and adapt based on real-time Search trends. So if you’re shopping for jeans, you might see filters for “wide leg” and “bootcut” because those are the popular denim styles right now — but those may change over time, depending on what’s trending. Dynamic filters are now available in the U.S., Japan and India, and will come to more regions in the future.

9. Get inspired beyond the Search box: Using Discover in the Google app, you'll see suggested styles based on what you've been shopping for, and what others have searched for too. For instance, if you’re into vintage styles, soon you’ll see suggested queries of popular vintage looks. Just tap whatever catches your eye and use Lens to see options for where to buy.

With these new features, your shopping experience on Google just got a lot easier, more intuitive and, of course, more fun. And regardless of where you end up buying, these tools can help you find what you want more quickly and maybe even discover the next thing you'll love.

“Hey Google, read with Reese’s Book Club”

As a young girl growing up in Venezuela, I had an insatiable appetite for reading. From fictional novels to computer science manuals, you name it, I would read it. Books allowed me to get lost in other worlds, expand my imagination and ultimately inspire me to dream bigger. These days, you can catch me reading with my two young kids or when I take some quiet “me time” on the weekends.

That’s why I’m delighted that Google Assistant has partnered with Reese’s Book Club to offer a hands-free, immersive reading experience on Nest smart speakers, smart displays and Assistant-enabled mobile devices in English-speaking countries across the globe. Assistant users can now discover Reese Witherspoon’s monthly book picks, take a quiz for personalized book recommendations and get exclusive commentary about each book pick from Reese herself.
A GIF of the new Reese’s Book Club reading experience available on Google Assistant.

Google Assistant has partnered with Reese’s Book Club to offer a hands-free, immersive book curation experience.

To get started, simply say “Hey Google, read with Reese’s Book Club” on your Assistant-enabled device.

You can easily link your account if you’re an existing Reese’s Book Club member —  or sign up with your Google account if you’d like to join. And you can still access this great content even if you aren’t a member: In addition to checking out the current and previous month’s book picks, you can find out why Reese recommends a particular monthly book pick, or hear her personal book reviews. And if you want to read the full book, simply head to Google Play Books to make a purchase. You can also add books to your “book pile” so you can better keep track of what you’d like to read next.

What I like most about the book club is that each monthly book pick features interesting and diverse narratives from a female perspective. I can’t wait to read with Reese and hope you enjoy it just as much as I do.

Kick off the school year with Google Assistant and Search

Wherever your kids will be learning from this year, one thing is undeniable: The school year is fast-approaching. Over the past two years, my family's adopted a few new routines — some that will stick, and others we'll need to adjust. Here's how I'm using Google Assistant and the latest educational Search features to help keep my family on track and connected — while still making time for some fun.

Make mornings more fun

I already use Family Bell on my smart speakers and smart displays to help us stay on top of our routines throughout the day, with bells that remind me when it's time for family dinner or to water the plants. In several weeks, Family Bell will be available to ring on mobile devices, making it even easier to set up and use throughout your day. Also coming soon, Family Bell will offer new, customizable bells that will initiate a checklist on your Nest Hub. I’ve been testing this feature and it’s been a great way to remind my kids what they need to do before heading out the door for school in a fun way— things like making their beds, getting dressed and brushing their teeth. When a task is completed, my kids enjoy the fun, on-screen celebratory animations and sounds that appear. I’m also planning to make a checklist for bedtime since it’s been working so well!
Image of new morning Family Bell for back to school on Nest Hub

To start my own day, I’ll use a new feature coming soon that will automatically start my morning routine, check the weather and play the news, once I dismiss my morning alarm. To set this up, I’ll simply add "dismiss an alarm" as the start to my morning Routine.

Feeling close to my kids, even when we’re not together

For the first time in a long time, my kids won't be home with me all day. I made sure my family group was set up so I could have peace of mind knowing where everyone is during the day. I can say "Hey Google, where's my family?" to make sure they made it to school safely or are still at soccer practice. I can also send messages to the group throughout the day with Family Broadcast. When I head back to the office later this year and I’m running a bit late, I'll be able to say “Hey Google, tell my family: I’m leaving in five!” to send a message to our personal and home devices so they know I’m on my way home.

Keep the learning going at home

I always carve out time for story hour with my kids. For Harry Potter fans, Assistant will soon have new stories from Pottermore Publishing that you can access from a smart display or Android device. Just say “Hey Google, tell me a Fantastic Beasts Story” to enjoy the magic of the Wizarding World beasts. Discover a world map of beasts and wander the globe while you listen to audiobook highlights.

Image of Fantastic Beasts experience on Nest Hub

Having grown up in various countries, it’s important to me that my kids have access to all kinds of stories. I'm thrilled that we've partnered with The English Schoolhouse, an award-winning, Black woman-owned publishing house, to bring more diverse teaching tools and stories to Assistant in the coming weeks. Soon you’ll be able to say, “Hey Google, tell me a ‘Tallulah the Tooth Fairy CEO’ story” — or “Hey Google, tell me an ‘Elijah Everett, Kid Principal’ story.” I’ll even play one of my favorite guessing games with the kids by saying “Hey Google, talk to Guess the Drawing for Kids” on my Nest Hub.

Discover more fun stories by asking, “Hey Google, tell me a story” or find other fun family activities by saying “Hey Google, teach my family something new.” (With a parent's permission, children under 13, or the applicable age in their country, can have a personalized Google Assistant experience, powered by Family Link.)

While my own young kids aren’t quite ready for advanced math, chemistry and physics, older learners can use different Search tools to understand complex concepts — Search’s new interactive periodic table is a great example. Using a phone or computer, these Augmented Reality and 3D models help anyone quickly visualize an atom. Zoom in and see the electrons orbiting the nucleus and the protons and neutrons that make it up.
Gif of augmented reality periodic table on Google Search

I can even brush up on my own Spanish with the “Live Translation” Assistant button in Search on my phone when I need to remember a specific word or phrase.

Hopefully this school year goes smoother than the last, but it’s a tough transition every year. These new tools can help make the switch to the school year an easy one for the whole family.

Plan a perfect weekend with new Google Assistant features

Moms everywhere can likely agree that this year (and then some) has had us working overtime. As a mom of two who's working at home, I know that's how I've felt. Maybe that's why I'm extra excited for Mother's Day this year. And just in time, there are a few new Google Assistant features my family and I will be using to schedule the perfect weekend.

First, I’ll Broadcast from my morning run

We’re extending one of our most popular Assistant features, Broadcast, so you can reach your family wherever they are, and they can respond from any device including from their phones. With Family Broadcast, when I get home from my Saturday morning run, I can broadcast to my newly created Google Family Group, “Hey Google, tell my family, how about lunch at noon?” across all our smart speakers and displays. The message will even reach my husband on his iPhone (or Android device) while he’s on the way home, letting him reply by voice or by tapping the "reply" button, “Hey Google, reply sounds good, stopping by grandma's house. See you in 15 minutes.”

Family Broadcast from mobile

Then I’ll set a Family Bell reminder for some afternoon gardening

Two new Family Bell reminders I plan to set this weekend will remind me to water the plants (which I love, but often forget to do) as well as alert my kids to tidy up the house. It’s becoming a very popular feature. Since last summer, more than 20 million Family Bells have been rung to help families stay organized - that’s nearly 19 years worth of bells! As a quick hint, you’ll soon be able to just say “stop” to end the bell, starting in English. No need to use “Hey Google” again, just like with alarm and timers.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be expanding Family Bell to eight new languages, including Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Another highly requested feature we’re rolling out today is the ability to have Family Bells ring across multiple home devices at one time (not just one smart speaker or display).

Followed by winding down with new stories with the kids

Assistant is getting new stories and games that you can access from a smart display or Android device — this weekend, we plan to learn more about Quidditch from the Harry Potter stories with a simple “Hey Google, tell me a Quidditch Story.” We’ll be partnering with Pottermore Publishing to bring more stories later in the year, so stay tuned for more Wizarding WorldTM news.

We’re also bringing the “Who Was?” series from Penguin Random House to your smart display. Just say “Hey Google, talk to Who Was Heroes’” and listen to stories about Ida B. Wells, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and over 100 others. To get a full list of all the stories that are available, simply say “Hey Google, tell me a story.” (With a parent's permission, children under 13, or the applicable age in their country, can have a personalized Google Assistant experience and access these games designed for kids and families, powered by Family Link.)

Who was?

And have some fun with new games

My husband and I love trivia, and will play the popular game show “Hey Google, talk to ‘Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?’” on our Nest Hub.

Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader

Plus, a surprise or two

We had to add a few easter eggs too. Try using a timer on Mother’s Day and see what happens!

Since the handwashing song was so popular, we created new ones to help kids stay on task and do their chores. Try “Hey Google, Sing the clean up song,” “Hey Google, Sing the go to sleep song” or “Hey Google, Sing the brush your teeth song.”

Sing a clean up song

Hopefully this schedule gives you a little Mother’s Day inspiration — or even just a stress-free weekend.

5 new ways Google Assistant can make the day a little easier

Spring is here, and with it, a helping hand from Google Assistant. Today we're introducing five new features that help you tackle small things around the house (and from the car).

1) Can’t remember where you put down your phone?Don’t sweat it. Already one of the most popular features for Google Assistant, you can tell your Nest smart speaker or smart display, “Hey Google, find my phone,” for all devices, now including iPhones. For iPhones, once you opt in to receiving notifications and critical alerts from the Google Home app, you’ll get a notification and hear a custom ringing sound (even when the phone is on silent or if Do Not Disturb is enabled).

2) Get your takeout faster.Over the last year, more and more people started ordering takeout and delivery on Google, and more restaurants added the “order” button to their Business Profiles on Search and Maps. To make online food orders even easier, Assistant can now help you complete your purchase in only a few steps powered by Duplex on the web. To get started, you’ll need to first search for a restaurant near you from the Google App on Android and select “Order Online” or “Order Pickup.”  When you finish your online takeout order from a restaurant we partner with and click “check out,” Assistant will automatically navigate the site and fill out your contact and payment details saved in Google Pay and synced to Chrome Autofill. At launch, we’re partnering with select restaurant chains and will be adding more across the U.S. later this year.

3) Try a new sunrise or sunset Routine for your smart home devices. Now available globally, these Routines are based on your  location. For example, you can automatically have your living room lights turn on and the sprinklers start when the sun goes down. It’s easy to set up:

  • Select the “New” routine tab in the Google Home app or Assistant settings.
  • Under “how to start,” you’ll need to “add starter,” then you’ll see an option for “Sunrise/sunset.”
