Google Play Pass: Your ticket to hundreds of apps and games, all without ads or in-app purchases

Google Play has always been about connecting you to the best apps, games, and digital content. Since everyone plays a little differently, we wanted to introduce a new way to enjoy many of these digital experiences: Google Play Pass. We’re excited to announce that Play Pass is coming to New Zealand.

Play Pass is a subscription service that gives you access to hundreds of apps and games that are completely unlocked—all without ads, in-app purchases and upfront payments. Play Pass offers a high-quality, curated collection of classic favourites like Sonic the Hedgehog to brand new titles like Levelhead, and from award-winning Indies like Stardew Valley to useful apps like Photo Studio Pro, with new apps and games added every month.

Play Pass is rolling out to Android devices in New Zealand this week. Kiwis can get started with a one-month trial, and subscribe for just NZD $8.99/month or save with a yearly subscription for just NZD $54.99/year.

Apps and games you already love, plus more to discover
The Play Pass collection spans hundreds of titles, from games that help you unwind to apps that power productivity. We think the creators of Monument Valley put it best: “Play Pass helps encourage people to try new experiences they would not have otherwise," says Maria Sayans, CEO of Ustwo games.

You’ll find well-known titles like Terraria, Monument Valley, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. And other amazing titles you might be less familiar with like Levelhead, LIMBO, This War of Mine, Teslagrad, and many more. With new additions every month—including favourites like The Gardens Between and Kingdom Rush, coming soon, and brand new releases premiering on Play Pass later this year like Bright Paw from Rogue and Line Weight from The Label—there’s always something new to discover.

To make all of these apps and games easier to find, we’ve added a new Play Pass tab for subscribers. Play Pass apps and games can also be found throughout the Play Store–just look for the Play Pass “ticket.” All apps and games found on the Play Pass homepage or throughout the Play Store with the ticket are completely unlocked with your subscription.

Share with the whole family
Just as with Google Play Family Library, family managers can share their Play Pass subscription with up to five other family members in their Google Family. Each family member can access Play Pass individually, so your experience won’t be affected by what others download. Play Pass also has a great selection of family-friendly apps and games—from Sesame Workshop to Learny Land—so the whole family can enjoy.

Get started
Once Play Pass is available this week, you can start your trial by simply opening the Play Store app on your Android device, tapping the menu at the top left, and looking for “Play Pass.” You can learn more here. Have fun!

The new Google Pixel Buds are available today for your listening pleasure

In October, we introduced the all-new Google Pixel Buds—with high-quality sound, an unobtrusive design that fits securely and comfortably in your ear and helpful AI features. We wanted to make sure whether you're streaming content while working out or sitting in a noisy room talking on a conference call, you have the best possible audio experience. Today, Pixel Buds are available for $279 in Clearly White in Australia through the Google Store.
We sat down with some of the team behind Pixel Buds to learn more about what’s new, and also to hear how they’ve been using them.
Get started easily with Fast Pair
“I always used to use wired headphones because I had concerns about the reliability of Bluetooth® connectivity, as lots of other earbuds have pairing problems, including the original Pixel Buds. With the new Pixel Buds, we focused on improving Fast Pair to eliminate these pain points and easily connect to your phone.”
 - Ethan Grabau, Product Manager
Clear calls with special mics and sensor
“To give you clear calls, even in noisy and windy environments, Pixel Buds combine signals from beamforming mics and a special sensor that detects when your jaw is moving. This helps so you don't have to look for a quiet place to take a call. It’s come in particularly handy these past few weeks for me working from home with two young daughters.”
 - Jae Lee, Audio Systems Engineer
Adaptive Sound for better audio
“Adaptive Sound is perfect for those moments like when you’re steaming milk for a latte, or when you're washing your hands or the dishes. Those noises can eclipse your audio experience for a bit, until the latte, or your dishes are done.”
 - Basheer Tome, Senior Hardware Interface Designer
“To help, Adaptive Sound temporarily and subtly adjusts your volume to accommodate for the new noise in your environment, and goes back to normal after it’s dissipated. It works kind of like auto-brightness on your phone screen: It momentarily adjusts to the world around you to make the experience of using your device a little simpler.”
 - Frank Li, UX Engineer
Hands-free help with Google Assistant
"When I’m working in the yard and wearing gloves, I can use ’Hey, Google’ on my Pixel Buds and easily control my music. I can also hear my notifications, and reply to a text message with just my voice and Google Assistant.
"And when I'm taking my dog on our daily walk and using my Pixel Buds, I use Google Assistant to navigate and check my fitness progress hands-free while juggling a leash and bag of dog treats. The Pixel Buds are slim enough they fit snag-free under a hat or hoodie, too."
 - Max Ohlendorf, Technology Manager
Real-time translations with conversation mode
“We set out to see how we could use Google Translate on Pixel Buds to reduce language barriers. Making the conversation as natural as possible even with the use of the phone was important, so we decided to create the split screen UI to show exactly what was being said, and translating it in real time on the screen with conversation mode. Any exposure to a different language is also an opportunity to learn, so we wanted to make the feature is not only as helpful as possible for things like being in a different country, but also as simple as being able to help bilingual households across generations connect through language.”
 - Tricia Fu, Product Manager
Peace of mind with Find My Device
“The fear of losing expensive wireless earbuds is real, and in many cases a reason why people are afraid of trying them. We tried to reduce that fear a bit with Find My Device. If an earbud falls out when you’re walking or running, you know right away. But you may be less aware when you return home and absentmindedly put them down somewhere. So we built the ability to let you ring your earbuds from your phone. We also wanted to make sure we were thoughtful in what that experience is like. You can ring one earbud at a time, to focus on finding either the left or right earbud. The moment your hands touch the lost earbud, the ringing will stop. We hope people won’t need to use this feature often, but if they do, they can find misplaced earbuds more easily.”
 - Alex Yee, Interaction Designer
Like Pixel phones and other Google devices, Pixel Buds will get better over time with new features, including an update to Find My Device which will show the last known location of your earbuds. Check out more cool features on Pixel Buds and see which features will work with your device.

Introducing a transparency report for New Zealand’s political ads

We first launched our Transparency Report in 2010 with the goal of showing users how policy impacts access to information and informing discussions about the free flow of information online. Over the years, we’ve evolved the report, and in 2018 we added the Political Advertising on Google section.

Google’s goal has always been to support election integrity by providing transparency into the political advertising spend on our platforms, and earlier this month, we set out our support of the New Zealand General Election. We have implemented a verification process for New Zealand advertisers running election ads, effective immediately. Advertisers who want to run election ads in New Zealand must apply for verification and demonstrate their eligibility to run such ads. We also require that election ads contain a disclosure identifying who has paid for the ad. Now, we’re continuing to roll out new transparency features with the addition of the transparency report: Political Advertising on Google and Political Ad Library for New Zealand General elections.

For the first time in New Zealand, our transparency report will show who bought election ads, how much money they spent, how those ads were targeted, and the election ads themselves. Election ads in New Zealand are ads that feature a political party, candidate or current officeholder for the New Zealand Parliament; or an option up for vote, an option proponent, or a call-to-vote for an officially declared national referendum. We designed this report for anyone interested in more transparency into election ad spending on our platform—the information is searchable and downloadable so that you can easily access and sort through the data. We’re updating the report every week, so as we head into election season, anyone can see new ads that get uploaded or new advertisers that decide to run election ads on Google platforms.

Meanwhile, our new, searchable Political Ad Library includes details like which election ads had the most impressions, renderings of the election ads running on our platform, and more information about specific advertisers’ campaigns. In addition, the data from the report and Political Ad Library is publicly available on Google Cloud’s BigQuery. Using BigQuery’s API, anyone can run their own unique queries on this data set. Researchers, political watchdog groups and private citizens can use our data set to develop charts, graphs, tables or other visualizations of political advertising on Google Ads services. Together with the Transparency Report, we hope this provides unprecedented, data-driven insights into election ads on our platform.

Even with these transparency updates, we know there is still more work to be done to protect elections. We’re also continuing to share our Protect Your Election tools to safeguard campaigns from digital attacks. As we approach the 2020 General Election, we’ve introduced new tools to help protect political campaigns, provide voters with accurate information, and increase transparency on our platforms, and we’ll continue to do more.

Find great films and shows to watch right now

As we’re spending more time at home, many of us are looking online for inspiration for new shows or films to watch. But with so many great films and TV shows out there, picking the right one can be tough. Starting today, we’re bringing a new experience to Google Search in Australia that we hope will help you spend less time choosing and more time watching.

Now, when you search for things like “good shows to watch” or “what to watch”, you’ll see suggestions of what to rent, buy, or stream from a number of providers. At launch in Australia, we’ll surface recommendations of films and TV shows from Disney+, Foxtel, Google Play, Stan, YouTube and more - and we look forward to adding more streaming providers in the coming months.

Use the “Edit Providers” button to add which TV and movie subscription(s) you already have for personalized recommendations based on your subscription.

What you want to watch will likely change depending on your mood. You might feel like a drama or documentary one night, and the next day find yourself wanting something lighter. Even when you’re hankering for something specific, like “horror movies from the 80s” or “adventure documentaries about climbing,” Search will give you options.

In addition to finding recommendations in Search, with the “Watchlist” feature, saving shows for later has never been easier. After you search “what to watch,” simply tap “Watchlist” in the preview window for any show or film to add it to your list. You can navigate between your recommendations and the “Watchlist” tab so you won’t lose track of what’s already been saved.

This is just the first version of this experience, stay tuned as we add more interest categories and further updates in the coming months.

We hope this helps you plan your next night’s viewing, you might just find a new favourite!

Google Nest Mini is here, New Zealand

Google today officially announced the Nest Mini is coming to New Zealand. Nest Mini is a smart speaker that helps people get stuff done with the power of the Google Assistant. From June 25, you can buy the Google Nest Mini for NZD $89 from Spark and other leading retailers including Noel Leeming, JB HI-FI, Harvey Norman and The Warehouse.

The discreet and stylish speaker is designed to help control your smart home, providing hands-free assistance from Google Assistant, built with sustainable materials.

A Speaker with Powerful Sound
Nest Mini has a big and rich sound. Our expert audio engineers developed proprietary audio tuning software, allowing us to get the most out of the hardware with a full, clear and natural sound at every volume level. We didn’t want to suppress any auditory details, so what you’ll hear when listening to music on Nest Mini is authentic to the artist’s vision.

If you’re listening to music, podcasts and other types of media on Nest Mini, LED lights will light up as your hand gets close to the device, indicating where you can tap to adjust the volume. We’ve also improved Mini’s ability to hear you in noisy environments.

And Nest Mini will dynamically adjust the volume of the Assistant, news and podcasts based on any background noise that may be happening at the time. So when the dishwasher is running and you ask for the weather, you’ll hear the Assistant’s response at a louder volume.

Whole home audio
You can connect Nest Mini to multiple Nest speakers to build a sound system for your whole home. With more than one Nest speaker, simply create as many as you’d like in the Google Home app, and enjoy music, podcasts and more throughout your home.

And with stream transfer, you can fill your home with sound by moving your music, audiobooks and podcasts from one speaker to another with just your voice. Even transfer music or podcasts from your phone when you walk in the door. For example, If I’m hosting a dinner party, once I’m done cooking in the kitchen, I just say, “Hey Google, move the music to the living room speaker” to keep the party going.

The power of whole home audio goes beyond music, and it can be a helpful way to stay in touch with family members. With new Google Duo functionality on all Nest speakers, you can call your devices from the Google Home app, use the intercom feature to talk from device to device or even call someone on the other side of the world, for free—all you need is a Duo account and/or a Google Home or Nest smart speaker or display.

Your Assistant will keep getting better

With the Google Nest Mini you can ask it questions, tell it to do things, get news updates, control devices around your home and more. Up to six people can connect their account to one Nest Mini, so if you ask your Assistant for help, it can distinguish your voice from other family members or housemates. As the Google Assistant adds functionality over time, Nest Mini will automatically update its software so you don’t have to lift a finger while it keeps getting better.

Sustainably designed for your home
The Nest mini has soft rounded edges that blend in with your home. It comes in two colors: Chalk, Charcoal. We’ve also incorporated wall mounting capabilities into Nest Mini, so you can creatively integrate Nest Mini into your decor and save precious counter and shelf space.

Like so many of you, we’re committed to helping the planet, so the fabric covering on Nest Mini is made from recycled plastic bottles (meaning plastic bottles that have already been used and recycled). A single half-liter plastic bottle makes enough fabric to cover more than two Nest Mini devices. The external enclosure is also made from 35 percent post-consumer recycled plastic. Now, all Nest products are built using varying amounts of recycled plastics.

Like our entire Google Nest range, Nest Mini has been designed with your privacy in mind and, per our privacy commitments, there’s a switch for you to disable the mic. You can also access, review and delete your queries at any time via My Activity.

Once you set up Nest Mini, just say, “Hey Google, what can you do?” to get started. And once you do that, say “Hey Google, play a dance playlist” and get ready to party.

Supporting the 2020 New Zealand General Election

In September 2020, New Zealanders will take to the polls to vote in our General Election to elect our Government and decide on two referendums. To support this democratic process, we’re rolling out products and programs to help people get the information they need to cast their votes. Here are the ways we’ll be providing support:

Getting voters the information they need
We know that in the build-up to elections, people need useful and relevant information to help them navigate the electoral process. Across the world we’ve focused on ensuring Google Search provides timely and accurate information that helps people find, understand and participate in the electoral process. For the New Zealand election in 2020, we’ll be working with information from the Electoral Commission to make authoritative electoral information available and to help people find the info they need to enrol and vote.

Helping voters better understand the political advertising they see
To give Kiwis more information about the election ads they see across Google’s ad networks, we’ll require that any ad classified as an election ad, we make it clear to voters who is paying for the advertising. Election ads will mention a political party, candidate or current officeholder, or include information relating to a referendum vote.

We’ll also introduce a new process to verify election advertisers to make sure they are who they say they are. We will introduce a New Zealand-specific Political Ads Transparency Report and searchable ads library to provide more information about who is purchasing election ads, whom they’re targeted to, and how much money is being spent. Our goal is to make this information as accessible and useful as possible to citizens, practitioners, and researchers.

In the weeks before the launch of the Political Ads Transparency Report, we're working with political parties to help them understand digital best practices and will be sharing Google's ads policies with parties and candidates.

Protecting election information online
We’re continuing investments in keeping our own platforms secure and are working with campaigns, elections officials, journalists and human rights organizations to ensure the security of the online platforms that they depend on.

For the 2020 General Election, we’re offering in-person security training to these vulnerable groups as they face increased risks of phishing attacks. We’ve been walking them through Google’s Advanced Protection Program, our strongest level of account security and Project Shield, a free service that uses Google technology to protect news sites and free expression from DDoS attacks on the web.

In addition, Google News Lab will collaborate with news organisations to support online fact-checking. They’ll be offering a series of free verification workshops to point journalists to the latest tools and technology to tackle misinformation and support their coverage of the elections.

Like others, we’re thinking hard about elections and how we continue to support democratic processes around the world, including by bringing more transparency to political advertising online, by helping connect people to useful and relevant election-related information, and by working to protect election information online. Over the coming months you’ll hear more from us on each of these areas.

Dive into Ningaloo on Google Street View

Editor’s note: Today is World Oceans Day, a day when people around the globe celebrate the world’s oceans and the life they sustain.
On Australia’s western coast, you will find the world’s largest fringing coral reef: Ningaloo. The Ningaloo Coast is World Heritage listed and home to 300 species of coral, 500 fish species and megafauna such as whale sharks.
Late last year, we got to walk the coastal trails and dive beneath the waves to photograph this ocean paradise--and today, on World Oceans Day, we're inviting people across the globe to gaze at the turquoise waters and virtually swim with manta ray, stingray and sharks on Google Street View
Partnering with Parks and Wildlife Service WA and not-for-profit Underwater Earth, we explored Ningaloo from every angle, collecting imagery above, below and along the coast.
Adventurers can meander down to the shoreline of Cape Range National Park and to Oyster Stacks, within the Mandu Sanctuary Zone of Ningaloo Marine Park, before going for a digital snorkel at high tide with a rich diversity of fish--we’ve already carefully navigated the sharp oyster shells for you.
Walk the Oyster Stacks Snorkelling Area before stepping into the water.
Look beneath the surface at Oyster Stacks Snorkelling Area.
Or travel up to the Muiron Islands and to Whalebone--a dive site named after whalebone that has now been washed away, grown over, or reabsorbed into the fabric of the reef, and known for its swim-throughs and overhangs. This area is exposed to the swell and waves of the Indian Ocean meaning few branching corals can grow here, so it is dominated by a myriad of hard plating corals and stunning colourful soft corals, and is a popular spot for turtles too!
Whalebone is a beautiful dive site on the western side of South Muiron Island.
Whales, dolphins, manta rays, huge cod, turtles and whale sharks are abundant here, and this is one of many reasons this location is critical to the health of the ocean.
“We have been capturing underwater Street View imagery, partnering with Google, for over nine years. We believe in the importance of revealing precious ocean environments to the world to help educate and inspire ocean protection and conservation. Ningaloo Reef is simply too precious to lose,” said Christophe Bailhache, Co-founder of not-for-profit Underwater Earth, and underwater photographer for this Ningaloo collection.
“What an amazing opportunity to not only let Ningaloo enthral, excite and engage an even broader audience, but importantly help better understand this most beautiful and fragile of underwater wonders in the changing world we live in. Thank you Google and Underwater Earth,” said Dr Peter Barnes, Ningaloo Marine Park Coordinator.
We see this Street View capture as a chance to document the Ningaloo Coast in its current condition and keep track of how it's evolving. And by raising awareness and making sure that as many people as possible see this natural wonder, and get to understand its significance, we hope to do our bit to help protect this incredible place.

Free virtual digital skills training for Aussies from Grow with Google

Since Grow with Google launched in 2019, we’ve travelled across every state of Australia to help Aussies get the digital skills they need to succeed. Along the way, we’ve partnered with local business chambers, entrepreneurial networks, and community organisations to provide free tools and training to help people get the right skills to find jobs they want, advance their careers and grow their businesses.

In the last year alone, we’ve trained more than 100,000 Australians in digital skills, and seen firsthand how technology can create new opportunities for businesses and communities. More recently, we’ve also seen a significant spike in demand for our free online training resources as many people—particularly jobseekers and small businesses—face disruption caused by COVID-19 and look to digital skills training to help them through these challenging times. In fact, we saw a 300 per cent increase in the number of people completing online training modules on our Grow with Google website in April this year, compared with the same time period last year.

Though we’re currently unable to gather in person in large groups, it doesn’t mean the learning has to stop. We’re excited to announce a new virtual program from Grow with Google Australia that will ensure more Australians continue to have access to digital skills training and opportunities. We’re launching Grow with Google OnAir - a series of livestreamed and on-demand webinar trainings that will be available to anyone in Australia for free, for the first time.

The training has been designed specifically for small business owners, people adjusting to remote working and learning, jobseekers, teachers and community non-profit organisations. A series of seven webinars will cover topics like how to connect with your customers and manage your business remotely, improve your job search skills, and connect remotely using tools like Google Meet and Calendar. And all led by specialist Google trainers from our Sydney office.

It will also share more on how businesses can make the most of your free Business Profile on Google, with many businesses using this helpful tool to keep their customers informed as they adapt their businesses and products. One of those businesses is Expo Centric - a Sydney-based builder of exhibition stands and displays. When COVID-19 spread locally, they updated their range of product solutions to include hand sanitiser dispensers, protection screens, room partitions and portable desks to meet changing customer needs - and kept them informed through regular updates to their profile.

Grow with Google OnAir webinars will be livestreamed once a day from 9-18 June in one hour digestible workshops. Attendees will be able to ask live questions via a dialogue box. Register to attend for free at g.co/GrowOnAirAU

In addition to Grow with Google OnAir, which is available across Australia, we continue to support our team of local Digital Coaches and our network of more than 7,000 local partner organisations, so that they can teach virtual workshops in their communities.

Since 2014, Google Australia has trained over half a million Australians on digital skills through Grow with Google and other digital skilling programs. It’s our aim to ensure these opportunities remain available to everyone. Visit the Grow with Google Australia website to find a virtual program that’s right for you - no matter what stage of your digital journey you are at.
