This National Small Business Week, Build Your Online Skills with Lessons from the Pros

The web is helping small businesses grow. As the place where people turn to learn, discover, find, and buy things, it’s connecting customers to small businesses and small businesses to customers. Being online can have a big impact–in fact, businesses that are online grow 40 percent faster and are twice as likely to create new jobs than those that remain offline.1

We see the power of the web working for American small businesses. Millions of small businesses are found on Google Search and Maps every single day across the nation.

With a little bit of elbow grease and the help of technology, we believe every business can grow online. So together with our partners, we’re continuing our mission to help make that happen. Through our Get Your Business Online initiative, we’re bringing together free resources and tools to help you this National Small Business Week and beyond.

Learn from the pros through bite-sized lessons
Build your online business and marketing skills with five-minute lessons from Primer, our free mobile app. To celebrate National Small Business Week, we’re happy to announce new lessons created by small business experts Anita Campbell, John Jantsch, Ramon Ray, and Rhonda Abrams. Each has created a special lesson from their decades of experience working with and coaching small businesses. We’re also excited to share new web-based lessons.

Get your business online
Be where your customers are. Get your free listing on Google Search and Maps.  Show pictures of your business, list your hours, and add your phone number so customers can just click to call you or get directions. Businesses with complete listings are considered twice as reputable.2 Use this handy tool to get started.

Make sure your website works on mobile
Did you know that more than half of all Google searches happen on mobile phones? Mobile shoppers want quick results–53 percent say they’ll wait no more than three seconds before abandoning a site.3 How fast does your website load? Use the free Test My Site tool to see how well your site works on mobile. We’ll email you a personalized assessment with specific recommendations on how to make it better.

Want even more?
During National Small Business Week (and throughout the year), Google and our partners are hosting in-person workshops to help you grow your business online. Find a workshop near you.

Small businesses are the heart of our communities. Thank you for making the places we call home, home.

Happy National Small Business Week.

Announcing Google SMB Heroes 2017 – Celebrating the heroes of Digital India

With 400 million Indians users on the internet and 300 million using smartphones, Indians have wholeheartedly embraced digital to find information and make decisions. This also opens up a large opportunity for small and medium businesses to engage these users to accelerate their growth. However, only 32% of Indian SMBs are leveraging the power of digital today.1

Recognising the need to skill these businesses and support their journey to digital, earlier this year, we announced a large scale training program - Digital Unlocked. Through this program, we aim to make quality digital training available to every single small business in India that wants it. We also launched Primer, a free mobile app designed to teach digital marketing skills in a quick, easy and interactive way.

Continuing with our commitment to partner with India’s small and medium businesses, today I am excited to announce SMB Heroes. SMB Heroes is a nationwide program designed to recognize and celebrate SMBs that have embraced digital successfully. The program comprises three categories - Business Innovation through Digital, Impacting Change through Digital and Woman Business Leader. Starting today and until April 24, businesses from across the country can submit their nominations on the SMB Heroes website - g.co/smbheroes. Following this, one  winner from each category will be shortlisted for five major zones, culminating in a national finale in Delhi later this year.

We are enthused about the opportunity to celebrate the amazing work that many Indian businesses are already doing, as well as the ability to provide a roadmap for other businesses to learn and chart their own path to success.

Become a Smarter Marketer with Primer

Whether you’re a small business owner or a professional at a large company, connecting with customers can be a challenge. The opportunity to reach people in the moments that matter has never been greater, but to succeed, you must master a new set of tools, skills, and strategies. Keeping up can be tough for even the most experienced marketer.

At Google, we’re working hard to make sure everyone can keep up in today’s digital landscape. That’s why we’re happy to introduce Primer, a free mobile app filled with bite-sized lessons that help you put to work the latest and most useful marketing concepts. You can do Primer’s lessons on the go, whenever you have a few minutes free.  We think of it as an in-the-coffee-line guide to marketing.

Primer was inspired by the struggles my colleagues and I have faced while trying to learn new marketing topics during our busy daily schedules. The fact is, over 90% of adults don’t spend any time during the day educating themselves.1 So we wanted to build a tool that offers digital lessons that can be soaked up within five minutes – like when you’re on the morning train commute, waiting in line for coffee, or in between meetings.

Primer lessons are available offline so they can be done anywhere. And each lesson is fun and jargon-free, covering topics like mobile site design, programmatic buying, content marketing, and search advertising. In short, you’ll learn real skills you can use today.

Whether you’re looking to grow your business, advance your career, or simply build your professional aptitude, Primer presents you with fresh knowledge to become a smarter marketer. Download it now on iPhone and Android or visit us at www.yourprimer.com.
