Make your shopping easier and simpler with our new Google Shopping search experience

Online shopping has enabled a world of convenience -- whether you’re looking for a new pair of shoes or car accessories, there are numerous online destinations from where you can find and browse product options. But given the multitude of these very options, it is often challenging to find answers to questions like “Where can I find a red short-sleeved dress” or “Where can I find the best deal?”

India has the second largest population of internet users in the world, and it’s only getting bigger. While 400 million Indians are online today, less than one out of three buy things online. On the business front, there are 58 million SMBs in India, of which 35 percent are engaged in retail trade (Source: Sixth Economic Census). However, a very small number of them have an online presence -- there clearly exists a huge opportunity for retailers to surface their merchandize to the millions of online consumers.

At Google, our mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful to everyone. That’s why today we are bringing a new and exciting shopping search experience to India. This is a personalised and immersive experience that will help you easily filter through offers, review prices from multiple retailers and find that right product. This experience will get richer with usage and is available across several Google products: the first is a made-to-browse (think window shopping!) experience on the new Shopping home page. We are also making the same experience available to users with entry level phones, through a Progressive Web App (PWA). Further, starting today, you will also see a new Shopping tab on Google Search. Finally we are introducing Style Search in Google Lens, an all-new visual approach to find the products you are looking for.

For retailers, Merchant Center has always been the place to upload store and product data for Shopping ads. Now you can also use Merchant Center to upload product details so they can appear across Google, without paying for ad campaigns. So far, the Merchant Center has been only available in English, and starting today we are expanding it to Hindi. With these changes, our aim is to empower many more retailers in India to participate and reach millions of internet users.

Shopping home page

The Shopping home page is a new made-to-browse destination for shoppers to search across multiple product categories and find products from thousands of retailers. To make the shopping experience richer, we have added some smart features, including price drops and a collection of the most popular products on Google.

Shopping tab in Google Search

You will now see a new ‘Shopping’ tab in Google Search showing a list of products matching your search, with the ability to view details and review prices across retailers. Queries can be made in both English and Hindi.

Style search in Google Lens

Have you ever looked at an awesome pair of shoes and wondered where you could buy them from? With Google Lens, you can now find similar products -- such as clothes, furniture, and home decor - just by using your phone camera. Simply point your camera at the product and we’ll do the rest!

From seasoned desktop shoppers to first-time users with entry-level smartphones, we hope these new shopping experiences will make finding what you’re looking for just a little bit easier. For merchants, we are supporting and partnering with the entire retail ecosystem -- be it shopping sites, to large retailers, to small local shops -- to give them the tools and technology to scale and thrive in today’s digital economy. We hope this enables all kinds of retailers, especially those who have never had an online presence, to reach millions of new consumers.

Year in Search 2018: Of winks, veils, and World Cups

https://img.youtube.com/vi/6aFdEhEZQjE/maxresdefault.jpg
Looking back, many big events, wins, and milestones have marked these past 365 days. Before the calendar clocks over, here’s a glance at the most significant moments in news, sporting events, along with the personalities, and top-of-mind questions that have captured the minds of India’s internet users -- bringing you our 2018 Year in Search recap.

This year in the top 10 overall list, sporting events along with entertainment are the two topics that dominated search queries. Interestingly football pipped cricket in the overall search listing, with questions around FIFA topping those around the IPL events. Also making it to the list were searches for children’s shows including Baal Veer and Motu Patlu! Rounding up our overall list were queries relating to the Rajinikanth/Akshay blockbuster Robot 2.0.

On the topic of movies, besides Robot 2.0 topping the heap of movie queries, there were a host of other Indian movies that comprised the top 10 list including Baaghi 2, Tiger Zinda Hai and Dhadak. The three Hollywood movies that made it to this list all happened to be Marvel blockbusters: Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, and Deadpool 2. On the music front, the songs that ruled the roost included Neha Kakkar’s Dilbar Dilbar, Arijit Singh’s Tera Fitoor and others, where the lone English entrant was the evergreen Latin hit Despacito, which also figured in our list last year!

Among the personalities that took prominence in Search this year, topping the list is Priya Prakash Varrier with her wink that went viral, followed by none other than Priyanka Chopra’s spouse, Nick Jonas. Priyanka Chopra, came in at fourth place, with Sapna Choudhary making it to the top three. Indicating the undeniable interest in weddings, we also saw Meghan Markle figuring in the list of most-searched-for personalities.

In general news, we saw a wide range of topics that reflected the zeitgeist of Search users -- three weddings figured prominently here: Priyanka Chopra/Nick Jonas, Deepika Padukone/Ranveer Kapoor, and Sonam Kapoor/Anand Ahuja. Other topics that grabbed attention included queries around the world’s largest statue, the Statue of Unity, unveiled in Gujarat earlier this year. Rounding off the list were a span of news topics including Section 377, the union budget, bitcoin, even the Nipah virus.

Among the most interesting searches were those centered around ‘How to..’, and ‘What is…’, which saw a wide variety of asks spanning ‘What is the kiki challenge’, as well as ‘How to solve a Rubik’s cube’. The list of ‘Near me…’ queries indicated the highest interest for mobile stores, supermarkets, gas stations, and cash points, with jobs near me also in the reckoning.

Google News Initiative kicks off Asia-Pacific Innovation Challenge

In Asia-Pacific,  journalists and publishers are increasingly grappling with questions over how quality journalism can thrive in the digital age. From Yangon to Manila, Sydney to New Delhi, they are experimenting with fresh approaches to reporting and new business models.

We’ve been working hand in hand with publishers to understand those challenges, and over the past year we’ve supported Asian newsrooms and publishers through the Google News Initiative (GNI).

To help build a stronger future for journalism in Asia-Pacific, we created the Asia-Pacific GNI Innovation Challenge, which will fund projects that inject new ideas into the news industry.
How does the challenge work?

We are inviting proposals for projects aimed at increasing revenue from readers, including subscriptions, membership programs, contributions and/or new digital products and services.  A panel of Googlers and other tech industry executives will review the submissions and fund selected projects up to $300,000 and finance up to 70 percent of the total project cost.

The funding will be reviewed against several criteria, including a “sharing component” -  for example by publishing any findings or holding a seminar - so grantees can pass their knowledge onto others in the industry. For more information on eligibility, rules and criteria, sample projects and funding details, head over to our website.

How to apply?
Given the pace of change in the news industry, innovation has never been more important.  We want to make sure that all organizations, large and small, in the Asia-Pacific news ecosystem have the opportunity to suggest new ideas around this critically important topic.

Applications open on November 28, and the deadline to submit is January 9.  If you have any questions, tune into our APAC town hall on Monday, December 11 at 3.00 pm Singapore time. We are ready to help put your ideas into action and look forward to seeing what you submit!

Delhi and Bangalore, welcome to Neighbourly. More cities coming daily.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/6jIUy05FxM-hYsC3herd0JoajROELBKey1QUijI8wTS76O8oML88mVgm7CtCK0beipd76-iJ8DqqjGtcp3_eazQ2Xccq1IqJZKDTlaGRTpvbP9KeoEHrWZI0x82JWiaZXWUS4Rhh
Discover your neighbourhood — find tips, hotspots, and hidden gems from neighbours who know best

When Neighbourly launched in Mumbai, hundreds of thousands of neighbours across India joined the waitlist to request Neighbourly in their city. With over 1.5 million downloads and half a million people on the waitlist, we’re excited to begin rolling out Neighbourly across all of India, bringing more people a human, helpful and local way to learn more about your neighbourhood.

Today, we’re inviting neighbours in Bangalore and Delhi, which topped the waitlist, to join Neighbourly. Over the next few weeks, we will invite new cities to join every day, including Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Indore and more. If you want to see Neighbourly come to your city soon, show your interest by joining the waitlist!

Since June, seven cities have gotten early access to Neighbourly. We’ve seen people integrate Neighbourly into their daily routines asking just about anything, from the source of a strong LPG smell to why there are elephants on the street outside! Our favorite finding is that each city’s distinct personality comes out in the types of questions people are asking and answering:
  • Mumbai questions have been about flooded areas during the heavy rains and the nearest Dahi Handi celebration. Food is always a popular topic, with questions about the best late night restaurants or the best street food:आमच्या परिसरात वडा पाव वाला किती वाजता येतो (What time does the vada pav seller come to our locality?)
  • Jaipur’s student community is active on the app, asking all kinds of questions relevant to their studies: Accounts ki class kaha milegi jaha par achi study hoti ho? (Where can I find a good accounting coaching, where quality of coaching is good?)
  • Recent shifters in Mysore use Neighbourly to help them find information about their new routines: Where can I get a water purifier service?
  • Families and housewives in Coimbatore seek advice on shopping for festivals: Please help me with shopping for diwali. What are the fashion trends for girls at affordable price range?

While we’re happy to see great usage of Neighbourly, we’ve also been listening carefully to helpful feedback from our first neighbours. Many people, for example, asked to be able to join different neighbourhoods -- one where they live and one where they work. Over the last few months, our team has incorporated this feedback and more:

  • Join your neighbourhood with a tap. You’ll get automatic suggestions on the nearest neighbourhood so you can jump right in.
  • Switch between multiple neighbourhoods. If you live in one neighbourhood but work in another, you can add both and switch between them one at a time -- hearing from neighbours in each.
  • See better questions just for you. Every time you open Neighbourly, you’ll see the best questions from your neighbourhood. The more you use Neighbourly, the more personalized it becomes.
  • Learn how to get more responses. If you ask a question that is unlikely to get an answer from your neighbours, you’ll receive a notification with some advice on how to best ask them again.
  • Keep Neighbourly “neighbourly”. If you’re among the most helpful in your neighbourhood, you can earn Top Neighbour status. Top Neighbours help pick the best questions in your neighbourhood and also identify the ones that don’t meet the “Neighbourly Promise”.

We know that most of life happens within 1km from home or work and that many information needs are local. We’ve also found that when finding local information, people prefer to ask or discuss with another person -- whether that’s a friend, family member, or neighbour.

A few weeks ago we met Aslam, who runs a graphics store and has lived on Mira Road all his life. At 58 years old, he has a lot of experience and is eager to share it with others. Since he first downloaded Neighbourly, Aslam has answered hundreds of questions from his neighbours -- using the built-in voice functionality to easily speak and transcribe his answers.

And there are many more people like Aslam, coming from different neighbourhoods and representing different age-groups, who are helping their neighbours find relevant answers and local information. That’s why we built Neighbourly, that’s why people use it, and that’s why we’re so excited to make it available to everybody across India.

The latest Neighbourly app is available on the Google Play Store for all smartphones running Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) and higher. If you live in India, Neighbourly will be available in your city shortly. In the meantime, join our waitlist and invite your neighbours. You’ll be notified as soon as your neighbourhood is open!

Making technology for everyone means protecting everyone who uses it. For 20 years, Google has been building useful products to help make people’s lives easier. From the beginning, we’ve always known that when people use our services, they’re trusting us with their information and it’s our job to protect it.

Today, we started rolling out a newly expanded Google Safety Center. We’ve updated our resources and pulled even more information into one site dedicated to educating and empowering people on important topics like data security, privacy controls, and online protections for all of our users. The site will be available in more than 65 languages in the coming weeks.

Starting today, we’re rolling out our newly expanded Safety Center in India. We’ve updated our resources and pulled even more tools, easy security tips and information into one site dedicated to educating and empowering people on important topics like data security, privacy controls and how to use technology in a way that is right for your family.

Making technology for everyone also means protecting everyone who uses it, and therefore the newly expanded Safety Center will be made available in nine Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu.
Helping people manage their privacy and security is integral to everything we do. Over the years we’ve created many tools and are always improving them so you’re in control: Google Account gives you access to all the settings to safeguard your data and privacy; Privacy Checkup helps you quickly review and adjust what data Google uses to personalise your experience; My Activity helps you review and delete the activity data connected to your account.

Parents can also find information about how to use tools like Family Link and YouTube Kids to protect their family,  and get tips on how to talk with their children and teens about topics like being kind online, setting boundaries, and staying safe online.

The Google Safety Centre is part of our ongoing commitment to give you tools and information to control how your data is used in Google services and help empower you to stay safe online. As technology continues to change the way we live, work, and play, our commitment to keeping you safe and secure online continues to grow.

Over the past few years Kabaddi has become increasingly popular in India, and many of us are following our favorite teams throughout the season. In order to make it easier to stay up to date on league standing, players, upcoming matches and more, we’re adding a new feature to Google Search, that will provide you with all you need to know about your favorite Kabaddi team––right in the palm of your hands or on your desktop.

Now, when you search for “Kabaddi”, you’ll see an overview of upcoming matches as well as results from recent games. If you tap on the most recent match, you can dive deeper into game stats, such as points per player and total score, helping you stay in the know even if you missed the match.
This new feature also provides an overview of the current league standing. You can access an at-a-glance overview of where your team is at by just navigating to “points table”, making it easier to get the latest stats with just one tap or click.

We’re hoping that this will help organize information about this growing sport, keeping all the Kabaddi fans in India in the know on the latest matches, schedules and more. This new experience is now available in English on the Google Search app on Android and iOS, as well as the mobile web and desktop.
