When we launched Project Fi in 2015, we set out to make your wireless experience fast, easy and fair. Over the years, we’ve built upon that vision by bringing you features at no extra cost, like international data coverage in 170 countries and territories, spam protection, and data-only SIMs for your other devices. This all comes layered in our simple plan with no contracts or extra fees, 24/7 customer support, and Bill Protection—which gives you the flexibility to use unlimited data when you need it, but only pay for what you use when you don’t. We’re proud that we’ve achieved a customer satisfaction score (CSAT) of over 90%—but the thing we hear most from our subscribers is that they wished Project Fi worked with more devices.

Starting today, Project Fi is available on more phones: our plan now works with the majority of Android devices and iPhones. And since we’re officially expanding our device support, we’re making our name more official, too: we’re now Google Fi.

Use the phone you like—the choice is yours

Now, you can sign up for Fi with popular Android phones (including many Samsung, LG, Moto and OnePlus devices) and with iPhones (in beta). Since this is the first time Google Fi is available for iPhones, there are a few extra steps to get set up, which we’ll walk you through in the Google Fi iOS app. No matter what phone you use with Fi, you’ll get great Fi features—like reliable coverage, easy group plans, and high speed international data coverage for the same rates you pay at home. Plus, as always with Fi, there are no contracts and zero hidden fees.

Some plan features will depend on the Android or iOS device you use. So if you’re looking for the full Google Fi experience, including Fi’s unique technology to seamlessly switch between multiple cellular networks, you can use a phone designed for Fi—like the Pixel 3, Moto G6, and any other phone available on the Google Fi website. These phones include special hardware and software to move effortlessly between Google Fi’s networks and provide you with even more security and reliability through Fi’s new enhanced network feature.

Since we started Project Fi, we’ve worked to bring you the best connection—no matter where you are. Our network seamlessly switches between three 4G LTE networks, and gives you free access to 2 million Wi-Fi hotspots that are secured with Project Fi’s virtual private network (VPN) technology.

Today, we’re introducing our enhanced network in beta. We’re extending the Project Fi VPN to all your connections, so you’ll now have more security and privacy wherever you use data. Our enhanced network also enables a fast, seamless connection by intelligently switching between Wi-Fi and cellular.

Enhanced security and privacy

When you’re on the go, you’re likely connecting to new networks, and the security of all networks isn’t made equal. When you enable our enhanced network, all of your mobile and Wi-Fi traffic will be encrypted and securely sent through our virtual private network (VPN) on every network you connect to, so you’ll have the peace of mind of knowing that others can’t see your online activity. That includes Google—our VPN is designed so that your traffic isn’t tied to your Google account or phone number (just like mobile traffic that isn’t sent through the VPN).

Seamless, faster connections

Our enhanced network automatically detects when your Wi-Fi connection becomes unusable and then fills in those connection gaps with cellular data. If you’ve ever left your house and walked toward your car, you might have noticed your connection slows or even stops altogether as your phone clings to a weakened Wi-Fi connection. With our enhanced network, you’ll have a seamless connection on the go, and waiting to be reconnected becomes a thing of the past. In our testing, we’ve reduced the time without a working connection by up to 40 percent.

We’ll begin rolling out our enhanced network later this week to Fi-compatible phones running Android P. You can enable it anytime in Fi Network Tools in the Project Fi app.

When it’s time to get ready for a trip, you want to focus on the adventures ahead, not the hassle of figuring out your phone coverage. Bill Protection already lets you use your data, including when you travel, without running up your bill, and today we’re giving travelers some extra peace of mind by expanding our international coverage and introducing a new way to figure out if you’ll be covered with Project Fi on your next trip.

Know before you go

Project Fi will now let you know whether you’re covered on your next trip based on your upcoming international flights from Gmail. You’ll receive a notification in your Project Fi app shortly before your trip that allows you to easily see your coverage options and costs. These notifications will be enabled by default, but you can turn them off in your account settings.

If you’re already on Project Fi, you don’t have to do anything to activate your international coverage—it’s all part of your phone plan. If you’re considering joining Project Fi, for a limited time you’ll score $80 Fi service credit with the purchase of any new Fi-friendly phone. You can learn more about Project Fi on our site.

With Project Fi, we built our $10/GB “pay for what you use” pricing to put you in control of your phone plan and how much you pay for it. Today, we’re taking the next step in that journey with Bill Protection: a new take on a phone plan that combines the simplicity of our existing pricing with the flexibility of an unlimited plan.

And here’s the kicker: with Bill Protection you’ll never have to pay for unlimited data in months when you don’t actually need it. With the season for giving right around the corner, we’re excited to kick off the Fi it Forward referral challenge. The challenge is rolling out today starting on desktop.
