Long Term Support (LTS) channel for ChromeOS – Major update from 96 -> 102

ChromeOS LTS 102 is rolling out to most ChromeOS devices from September 19th, 2022 onwards. If you are currently on the ChromeOS Long Term Support (LTS) channel and aren’t pinned, your devices will automatically update from ChromeOS LTS 96 to ChromeOS LTS 102.

As a reminder, it is a recommended best practice to test an upcoming ChromeOS LTS release using the ChromeOS LTC channel on a small subset of devices.

We have a staged rollout process, so it will take some time for all devices on LTS 96 to get the LTS 102 release automatically.

Here are some options in the Google Admin Console to better control the upgrade process:

  1. You can specify the time of day and day of the week or month that a device restarts.

  2. You can notify users to restart their device.

  3. You can force users to relaunch their device within a certain amount of time.

  4. You can speed up updates by signing users out when the device lid is closed. That way, if a user doesn’t restart a device after downloading an update and then closes the lid, the device restarts and completes the update itself.
