It’s official! Google Fiber is now GFiber—new name, same amazing internet experience

At its core, the internet isn’t just about infrastructure and equipment—it’s the fuel our lives run on and the possibilities it unlocks for us everyday. For over a decade, we’ve been on a mission to push the boundaries of what home connectivity can be and create the internet provider we all want to have. We’ve been using GFiber as our primary name for over a year, and it’s time to make it official—Google Fiber is now GFiber. You’ll see it everywhere you see us! GFiber has been a nickname since our early days and we’re fully embracing the simplicity and energy that comes with that name.

Born from the internet

Google Fiber was born in a place synonymous with internet, and built by a team that defined the internet. We started as an ambitious project to see what would happen if the world had access to fiber optic internet that could truly keep up with the ever-increasing part of our lives we live online. While our roots in Google’s history of innovation remain our foundation, our evolution to GFiber represents our growth into an internet service provider that is 100% focused on creating a customer experience that stands apart. That’s what we’ve built our reputation on since our first days in Kansas City.

Nationally recognized. Locally loved.

This name is a reflection of our brand’s personality. GFiber is built for the modern age—fast, simple, reliable, and always prepared for what’s ahead. This tech-forward, customer-centered approach is our foundation and why GFiber has been ranked #1 in Customer Satisfaction for Residential Wired Internet Service in the South Region (which comprises the vast majority of our customers) by J.D. Power for the past three years (2023, 2024, and 2025). We also ranked #1 in all study dimensions across those years. When you take that together with being the four-time recipient of PC Mag’s Readers Choice award, customers across our markets are clear: they love GFiber.

Internet built for today and whatever comes next

Since our beginnings as Google Fiber, we’ve never been content with just good. Our product lineup and customer experience is continuing to evolve alongside our GFiber brand. Whether you’re a casual browser or a pro-grade power user, GFiber is designed to keep up with whatever you do online:

  • Making Multi-Gig mainstream: We’re setting a new bar with Core 1 Gig, Home 3 Gig, and Edge 8 Gig options, combining the features you want with the bandwidth you need for how you live online—whether it is simple wall-to-wall Wi-Fi or supporting intense remote work. It’s truly internet you never need to think about.
  • Latest tech and set-up to bring your connection to its max potential, at no additional cost: With Wi-Fi 7 included in Home and Edge and mesh extenders placed, and even professionally hardwired depending on your home’s layout, you can cover your whole home and ensure your heaviest use areas have the strongest connection.
  • An unparalleled customer experience—simple, symmetrical, and fair: Every product comes with the easy-to-use, award-winning GFiber App, symmetrical download and upload speeds, and a commitment to no contracts, no data caps, all at a price that hasn’t changed since 2012.
And we’re not stopping there. We’ve moved our optical network to 25G PON to ensure we can keep up as the internet grows. Bandwidth should inspire your imagination, not limit what you can do.

The best internet of today—and the future of connectivity—starts at GFiber, just as it did at Google Fiber. As we get ready for our next chapter, we’re focused on continuing to push the internet forward and creating an internet experience you can actually love. And you don’t have to take our word for it—we’re working every day to prove that we’re a different kind of internet company and we don’t intend to stop. We’re excited to continue our journey as GFiber, and that’s fast, very very fast, but as we’ve said, fast is just the beginning.

Closing the knowledge gap with agent skills

To bridge the gap between static model knowledge and rapidly evolving software practices, Google DeepMind developed a "Gemini API developer skill" that provides agents with live documentation and SDK guidance. Evaluation results show a massive performance boost, with the gemini-3.1-pro-preview model jumping from a 28.2% to a 96.6% success rate when equipped with the skill. This lightweight approach demonstrates how giving models strong reasoning capabilities and access to a "source of truth" can effectively eliminate outdated coding patterns.
