Stadia Savepoint: May updates

It’s time for another update to our Stadia Savepoint series, recapping the new games, features and updates on Stadia.

In May, players summoned the courage to take on the terrors of Resident Evil Village and competed in freestyle events around the world in Street Power Football. It wasn’t all intense gameplay, though — Stadia players happily managed vineyards in Hundred Days - Winemaking Simulator.

In addition to these games available now on the Stadia store, subscribers to Stadia Pro played new titles like STAR WARS: Jedi Fallen Order, Trine 4 - The Nightmare Prince, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number and Floor Kids. Claiming these titles within the growing Pro library of 25+ games makes them easy to play instantly, as long as you’re a Pro subscriber!

We’re well on our way to adding more than 100 games to the Stadia store during 2021. In fact, during May we gave players a sneak peek at Super Animal Royale, Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - The Official Video Game and Control Ultimate Edition. Plus, we’re looking forward to the launch of Ubisoft’s next entry in the Far Cry franchise with Far Cry 6 on Oct. 7, 2021!

Stadia Savepoint: April updates

It’s time for another update to our Stadia Savepoint series, recapping the new games, features and updates on Stadia.

In April, players took up detective work in Judgment as well as within The Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark, solving everything from macabre mysteries to violent crimes. They protected countless treasures from intruders in Legend of Keepers: Career of a Dungeon Manager and breakdanced to the beat in Floor Kids.

In addition to these April games available now on the Stadia store, subscribers to Stadia Pro played new titles like Resident Evil 7 biohazard Gold Edition, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA and PIKUNIKU — which they can claim as long as they’re Pro subscribers. More games to add to their growing library on Stadia!

We announced 10 new games from Stadia Makers, the program created in partnership with Unity to support independent developers bringing creative and unique games to the Stadia store. That includes FORECLOSED from Merge Games, a narrative-driven cyberpunk action-adventure coming in summer 2021, and Figment 2: Creed Valley from Bedtime Digital Games, a puzzle adventure through the human mind coming in fall 2021.

Following the April 1 launch of Resident Evil 7 biohazard Gold Edition as a Stadia Pro title, all Stadia players can also now play up to 60 minutes of Resident Evil Village ahead of its release on May 7. This demo is only available to play until May 9 at 5 PM Pacific time, no Stadia subscription or payment required.

They raced high-octane cars in DIRT 5 and started their journey as a legendary hero in Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition. In addition to these March games available now on the Stadia store, subscribers to Stadia Pro played new titles like PixelJunk Raiders, AVICII Invector, PAC-MAN Mega Tunnel Battle and Reigns — all on top of their existing library of Pro games.

Stadia Savepoint: January and February updates

It’s time for another update to our Stadia Savepoint series, recapping the new games, features and changes for Stadia.

So far in 2021, players have traveled the world over in the spy thriller HITMAN 3, and they’ve gone long for touchdown passes in Madden NFL 21. They’ve brawled in 16-bit action in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World™: The Game, and they’ve discovered the dark secrets of an ominous world in Little Nightmares II, available now in Stadia Pro. Subscribers to Stadia Pro also gained instant access to play new games like Hotline Miami, Figment and Enter the Gungeon on top of the existing library of Pro games available to play as soon as you sign up.

State Share launched in January — the newest platform feature available only on Stadia — and it lets you capture playable slices of supported games and share them with friends. It's as simple as taking a capture in-game and a game state will be automatically attached. Share the state via link to give friends the chance to try the same mission or custom level, beat your high score or experience new in-game content. Try it now across the entire HITMAN - World of Assassination trilogy as well as PixelJunk Raiders (play for free in Stadia Pro). State Share will be coming to more games soon.

Hitman 3 - Now available for purchase on the Stadia store.

Play a custom game state in HITMAN 3 with State Share by clicking here to play on Stadia. You’ll need to own HITMAN 3 to use this link.

If you haven’t already, try free games like February’s new Crayta: Starter Edition, which allows everyone on Stadia to create games, share them with friends and play community creations at the click of a link. Other free games on Stadia include Destiny 2 and Super Bomberman R Online!

More than 100 games are coming to the Stadia store in 2021, including FIFA 21 (March 17), Kaze and the Wild Masks (March 26), Outriders (April 1) and Judgment (April 23). We’re also looking forward to jumping into Far Cry 6, Riders Republic and First on Stadia games like Hello Engineer.

State Share now available

State Share, available in HITMAN 1, HITMAN 2, HITMAN 3 and PixelJunk Raiders, gives players the opportunity to share a playable slice of their games with others. (See more details on our support page.)

Focusing on Stadia’s future as a platform, and winding down SG&E

We launched Stadia with the goal of making your favorite games instantly available wherever you want to play them. With the recent successful launch of Cyberpunk 2077 on Stadia, gameplay on all types of devices, including iOS, growing our slate of YouTube integrations, and our global expansions, it’s clear that Stadia’s technology has been proven and works at scale. Having games streamed to any screen is the future of this industry, and we’ll continue to invest in Stadia and its underlying platform to provide the best cloud gaming experience for our partners and the gaming community. This has been the vision of Stadia since the beginning.

In 2021, we’re expanding our efforts to help game developers and publishers take advantage of our platform technology and deliver games directly to their players. We see an important opportunity to work with partners seeking a gaming solution all built on Stadia’s advanced technical infrastructure and platform tools. We believe this is the best path to building Stadia into a long-term, sustainable business that helps grow the industry.

Creating best-in-class games from the ground up takes many years and significant investment, and the cost is going up exponentially. Given our focus on building on the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening our business partnerships, we’ve decided that we will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team SG&E, beyond any near-term planned games. With the increased focus on using our technology platform for industry partners, Jade Raymond has decided to leave Google to pursue other opportunities. We greatly appreciate Jade's contribution to Stadia and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors. Over the coming months, most of the SG&E team will be moving on to new roles. We’re committed to working with this talented team to find new roles and support them.

What does this mean if you're a current or future Stadia gamer? You can continue playing all your games on Stadia and Stadia Pro, and we’ll continue to bring new titles from third parties to the platform. We’re committed to the future of cloud gaming, and will continue to do our part to drive this industry forward. Our goal remains focused on creating the best possible platform for gamers and technology for our partners, bringing these experiences to life for people everywhere.

Our scholarship to support women in gaming

An interactive experience that puts you in the shoes of a first responder. A multiplayer game that adjusts itself according to each players’ capabilities. A drone exploration passion project. These are just a few of the projects created over the past year by recipients of Google’s  scholarship for women in gaming.

In addition to my core role as a Partner Manager for the Stadia Global Partnerships team, I’m equally proud to lead my group’s scholarship efforts in collaboration with Google’s central scholarship and student development team.

Google is committed to advancing gender equity in technology, and this year Google’s gaming platform, Stadia, has sponsored the Generation Google Scholarship: for women in gaming (formerly the Women Techmakers Scholarship for gaming). Stadia’s sponsorship broadens the scope of this award. The program now includes students studying video game programming, game engineering, game design and development, games user research or a closely related field in gaming.

Applications for the 2021 scholarship are open now through Dec. 4, 2020 in North America as well as inEurope, the Middle East and Africa. To learn more about who is eligible and how to apply for the Generation Google Scholarship: for the women in gaming program, and for information on all our global programs, please visit our website

We asked a few of the inaugural 2020 scholarship recipients to share a bit about what the scholarship has meant to them and what they’ve been working on since receiving their award this summer. Here’s what they said:

Image showing a young woman looking into the camera smiling. She has long brown hair and she's wearing a pink shirt and shorts. She's standing on a beach, in the sand, there is blue sky behind her.

Francesca Palamara

University of Southern California, MFA in Interactive Media and Game Design
Favorite game: "Life Is Strange"

This scholarship has meant everything to me. It meant I was able to pursue my academic and professional goals stress-free. I’ve met a wonderful group of like-minded scholars, and found a supportive network across creative technology and games. Without the scholarship, I wouldn’t be able to pursue my thesis and internship as successfully, and I am extremely grateful.

Right now I am interning at Jam City as a Game Production Intern and working on completing my MFA thesis. My thesis is a case study that examines the overlooked mental and physical exhaustion of first responders. It’s a 10-15 minute 2D interactive experience that places players in the role of Alma, a Cuban nurse working at South Florida's Children’s Hospital. This project means a lot to me because I hope to humanize the reality of first responders’ every day experiences in both pandemic and non-pandemic times and shed light on an often overlooked sacrifice.

Image shows a young woman taking a selfie; she's looking into the camera and smiling. She has dark hark and glasses and is wearing a shirt with flowers on it.

Bex Ruvalcaba

Parsons School of Design/The New School, Dual-degree in BFA Design and Technology and BA Screen Studies
Favorite games: "Dig Dug," "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild"

Receiving this scholarship made it so I could fully finish my coursework for my dual-degree with confidence! Being in a five-year program does mean I have to pay for one more year of university than many of my undergraduate peers, so being able to have the funds for tuition and technology fees has been a weight off my back.

Lately I’ve been planning out a drone exploration game. There are a few technical skills I would like to gain through creating this game, like learning more about saving images in-game, but since it’s a passion project there isn't a lot of pressure on everything being perfect. I’m also currently interning at Gabb Global alongside my coursework where I’m helping the team create mobile language learning games for a new app they’re launching soon.  I’m passionate about creating systems of play both in physical and virtual form, and hope to be creating fun, interactive exhibits in the near future.

Image shows a young woman with brown hair wearing a brown coat, looking into the camera and smiling. She's standing against a window to a building that says "Dalhousie University, department of Computer Science."

Tabea Marzlin

Dalhousie University, Bachelor of Computer Science, Certificate in Graphics, Gaming, and Media
Favorite game: "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess"

This scholarship enabled me to focus entirely on my education. I was able to invest in new technical equipment to work on games from home efficiently, too. Most importantly, the many incredible women I  met through the scholarship have been a huge inspiration and source of friendship. We’ve bonded over video calls, sharing helpful industry advice, and having casual game nights together.

Currently, I’m studying online full-time, taking courses to further my game development knowledge in areas related to computer graphics, animation, and digital media. I successfully completed an internship as a Tools Programmer for Ubisoft Halifax over the summer, and look forward to returning to the studio for another work term next year. I believe games can push our technical and artistic limits, and tell new types of stories people can connect with. I want to use my knowledge and creativity to help shape the next generation of games as a lead programmer on a meaningful project.

Image shows a young woman wearing black, looking into the camera with her head slightly tilted, slightly smiling. She has long dark hair.

Miri Nudelman

Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, MDes, Video Game Design and Development
Favorite game: "Portal"

It’s been an incredible opportunity to meet (virtually) other like-minded influential women who take initiative to increase the number of women in tech and in gaming. The scholarship also allows me to pay for my master’s degree and to take extra courses outside the required curriculum.

Currently I work as a data developer at a gaming company. I'm also working on a multiplayer game that focuses on inclusive gameplay. The game collects data about the players' skill while they play. It analyzes this and adjusts the difficulty during the game for each player individually. This way everyone can play together no matter how skilled each player is. We all learn from playing. Even if the game doesn't aim to be educational,  it still teaches you something (a new mechanic for example), and that's what makes it fun.

Image shows a young woman with long red hair and glasses looking over her shoulder and smiling at the camera. She's wearing a graduation cap and gown and standing in front of a wall of flowers.

Adriana Mallary

Brunel University London, PhD in Games Research
Favorite game: "Dragon Age: Origins"

This scholarship  made it possible to research and pursue my dreams. It has given me access to VR, which allows me to program prototypes and test them at home. It  also supported the overall funding of my degree. Most importantly, however, is that it gave me access to the Google community.

I’m currently beginning my research journey for my PhD, so I’ve been exploring a number of topics. My primary focus is how the design of VR games can meet our psychological needs. As of now, I’m focusing on embodiment in games, embodied cognition, engagement and mechanics in VR, natural interaction/interaction design, and emotional design. I want to understand how and why certain player affordances in VR can affect our own psychology, which will hopefully make designing effective and impactful VR interactions easier for the industry in the future.
