Promoting high-quality, teacher-approved kids content on Google Play

With more kids spending time at home, parents are looking for ways to find apps and games for children that are both enriching and entertaining. Today, we’re announcing an update that will make it easier for parents to find this content on the Google Play Store. We’re launching the Teacher Approved program, an editorial program to highlight high-quality, teacher-approved apps for kids. This is part of our ongoing effort to create a safer Google Play for kids.


What’s changing

We consulted with academic experts to develop a framework for rating apps for kids. Specially trained teachers across the US will rate apps for kids based on this framework, evaluating things like:

  • Design quality
  • Appeal to children
  • Enrichment potential
  • Ads & in-app purchases
  • Age appropriateness

Teacher-approved apps will:

  • Be eligible to appear in the new Kids section on Google Play
  • Be eligible for featuring in banners or collections on Google Play
  • Display the new "Teacher approved" badge
  • Display information about what teachers found valuable on their app details page

As a result of these changes, we are removing the Family star badge and the Family section on Google Play. All apps that were in the Family section will continue to be discoverable on the Play Store and appear in search results. Note that this change will have no effect on Family Library.

Who’s eligible

Apps need to meet the requirements of the Designed for Families program before they’re eligible to be reviewed by teachers. All Designed for Families apps are automatically placed in the teacher review queue.

We made the decision to launch the Teacher Approved program a little early given the vast number of kids at home now. Teachers are working hard to review apps as quickly as possible, but it will take time to review all apps, so we appreciate your patience. Our initial launch will be limited to the US, to be followed by a global rollout in the coming months.

To help developers better understand what the teachers are looking for, we published a new learning path on Google Play’s Academy for App Success, including findings from Google Play’s research into technology usage by parents and kids.

Semantic Reactor: A tool for experimenting with NLU models

Companies are using natural language understanding (NLU) to create digital personal assistants, customer service bots, and semantic search engines for reviews, forums and the news.

However, the perception that using NLU and machine learning is costly and time consuming prevents a lot of potential users from exploring its benefits.

To dispel some of the intimidation of using NLU, and to demonstrate how it can be easily used with pre-trained, generic models, we have released a tool, the Semantic Reactor, and open-sourced example code, The Mystery of the Three Bots.

The Semantic Reactor

The Semantic Reactor is a Google Sheets Add-On that allows the user to sort lines of text in a sheet using a variety of machine-learning models. It is released as a whitelisted experiment, so if you would like to check it out, fill out this application at the Google Cloud AI Workshop. Once approved, you’ll be emailed instructions on how to install it.

The tool offers ranking methods that determine how the list will be sorted. With the semantic similarity method, the lines more similar in meaning to the input will be ranked higher.



With the input-response method, the lines that are the most appropriate conversational responses are ranked higher.

Why use the Semantic Reactor?

There are a lot of interesting things you can do with the Semantic Reactor, but let’s look at the following two:
  • Writing dialogue for a bot that exists within a well-defined environment and has a clear purpose (like a customer service bot) using semantic similarity.
  • Searching within large collections of text, like from a message board. For that, we will use input-response.

Writing Dialogue for a Bot Using Semantic Similarity

For the sake of an example, let’s say you are writing dialogue for a bot that answers questions about a product, in this case, cookies.

If you’ve been running a cookie hotline for a while, you probably can list the most common cookie questions. With that data, you can create your cookie bot. Start by opening a Google Sheet and writing the common questions and answers (questions in the A column, answers in the B).

Here is the start of what that Sheet might look like. Make a copy of the Sheet, which will allow you to use the Semantic Reactor Add-on. Use the tool to experiment with new QA pairs and how each model reacts to them.

Here are a few queries to try, using the semantic similarity rank method:

Query: What are cookie ingredients?
Returns: What are cookies made of?

Query: Are cookies biscuits?
Returns: Are cookies also called biscuits?

Query: What should I serve with cookies?
Returns: What drinks go well with cookies?



Of course, that small list of responses won’t cover many of the questions people will ask your cookie bot. What the Reactor allows you to do is quickly add new QA pairs as you learn about what your users want to ask.

For example, maybe people are asking a lot about cookie calories.

You’d write the new question in column A, and the new answer in column B, and then test a few different phrasings with the Reactor. You might need to tweak the target response a few times to make sure it matches a wide variety of phrasings. You should also experiment with the three different models to see which one performs the best.

For instance, let’s say the new target question you want the model to match to is: “How many calories does a typical cookie have?”

That question might be phrased by users as:
  • Are cookies caloric?
  • A lot of calories in a cookie?
  • Will cookies wreck my diet?
  • Are cookies fattening?


The more you test with live users, the more you’ll find that they phrase their questions in ways you don’t expect. As with all things based on machine learning, constantly refreshing data, testing and improvement is all part of the process.

Searching Through Text Using Input-Response

Sometimes you can’t anticipate what users are going to ask, and sometimes you might be dealing with a lot of potential responses, maybe thousands. In cases like that, you should use the input-response ranking method. That means the model will examine the list of potential responses and then rank each one according to what it thinks is the most likely response.

Here is a Sheet containing a list of simple conversational responses. Using the input-response ranking method, try a few generic conversational openers like “Hello” or “How’s it going?”

Note that in input-response mode, the model is predicting the most likely conversational response to an input and not the most semantically similar response.

Note that “Hello,” in input-response mode, returns “Nice to meet you.” In semantic similarity mode, “Hello” returns what the model thinks is semantically closest to “Hello,” which is “What’s up?”

Now try your own! Add potential responses. Switch between the models and ranking methods to see how it changes the results (be sure to hit the “reload” button every time you add new responses).

Example Code

One of the models available on TensorFlow Hub is the Universal Sentence Encoder Lite. It’s only 1.6MB and is suitable for use within websites and on-device applications.

An open sourced sample game that uses the USE Lite is Mystery of the Three Bots on Github. It’s a simple demonstration that shows how you can use a small semantic ML model to drive conversations with game characters. The corpora the game uses were created and tested using the Semantic Reactor.

You can play a running version of the game here. You can experiment with the corpora of two of the characters, the Maid and the Butler, contained within this Sheet. Be sure to make a copy of the Sheet so you can edit and add new QA pairs.

Where To Get The Models Used Within The Semantic Reactor

All of the models used in the Semantic Reactor are published and available online.
  • Local – Minified TensorFlow.js version of the Universal Sentence Encoder.
  • Basic Online – Basic version of the Universal Sentence Encoder.
  • Multilingual Online – Universal Sentence Encoder trained on question/ answer pairs in 16 languages.

Final Thoughts

These language models are far from perfect. They use their training to give a best estimate on what to return based on the list of responses you gave it. Machine learning is about calculation, prediction, and training. Models can be improved over time with more data and tuning, and in turn, be made more accurate.

Also, because conversational models are trained on dialogue between people, and because people are biased, the models will display biases that exist in the data that they were trained on, sometimes in ways you can’t predict. The series has eight episodes which aim to challenge, provoke thought, and enlighten listeners - from designers and developers, through to product managers and marketers, and those interested in the apps and games industry.

The podcast is hosted by Googlers Tamzin Taylor, who heads up Apps & Games Business Development for Google Play in Western Europe, and Dirk Primbs, who leads the Ecosystem Developer Relations team in EMEA. Together, they have many years of experience working with partners to assist with Android development, mobile, app, game, and business growth. Every week they will be joined by different guests for each of the episodes.

Sneak peek at what’s coming up

Kicking off the series are Judy Chen and Sarah Fuchs from Crowdstar, the developers of Covet Fashion and Design Home. They join us for episode 1 to discuss how to build a long-term games business by taking a holistic approach to the game, its players, and the people who create the game.

Ever wonder if it's worth selling your app or game business, and if so how to approach it? It's not all about pocketing the cash and walking away. For episode 2, game mergers and acquisitions expert Chris Petrovic from Zynga will talk about how acquisition can free developers to focus on what they love: creating great apps and games.

The popularity of subscriptions continues to grow, with developers who used subscriptions earning 4X more in 2018, than in 2016. Holly Ackerman and David Berlin, from the sports streaming platform DAZN, join us for episode 3 to provide some fascinating insights into how they have grown their subscription business in this industry.

Whether you are a startup in search of funding or an established business looking to accelerate your investment, venture capital can often be a good source of funds. In episode 4, venture capital expert Matteo Vallone from Cherry Ventures offers insights into the investment process and how to maximize your appeal to investors.

For episode 5, we have what is possibly one of the biggest topics in mobile and throughout the tech industry: privacy. Bruce Gustafson, CEO of Developers Alliance brings us up to speed on trust and safety, platform value, respecting the user, and ultimately building privacy friendly apps and games.

Successful game developers put players front and center of everything they do. When over 270 million people have played your games, you must be doing something right. Ben Clarke, Senior Global Marketing Director at Jagex, joins us for episode 6 to discuss some of the innovative approaches to player engagement and retention taken in their RuneScape games.

Figuring out how to make your app or game accessible to all can often be a challenge, sometimes both from an organizational and technical perspective. However, many developers have made accessibility a core part of their app development process and company culture. For episode 7, we’re joined by Ceri Lindsay and Rosalind Whittam from the BBC to discover how they address accessibility.

Today, Android is not just about smartphones, Android apps and games can run on a range of devices with larger screens, such as Chromebooks. At the same time, mature mobile game franchises are looking for opportunities beyond mobile. In our final episode 8, we’ll be joined by Maximiliano Rodriguez of Gameloft to talk about the challenge of taking games to big screens and new platforms.

Introducing Google Play Points in the U.S.

Today, we’re excited to announce that the Google Play Points rewards program is expanding to the United States following successful launches in Japan and Korea, where millions of people have already enrolled. The program is designed to show appreciation to our users and help increase engagement with your games and apps.

Google Play Points rewards users for any purchase they make on Play — including apps, games, in-app items, music, movies, books, and subscriptions - and for downloading select apps and games. For all developers, if you’re on Play billing, users will earn points on your apps and games immediately.

Play Points can then be redeemed for unique rewards like special items and discounts in Candy Crush, Homescapes, Lords Mobile and many others. We’re fortunate to be working with a select group of developers to offer these rewards for the U.S. launch — including Niantic, King, Electronic Arts, Playrix, Jam City, Kabam, Ludia, Kongregate, and others. Users can also redeem their points for Google Play Credit, and spend it on your app or game just as they do today.

Users are finding value in our initial Play Points markets, Japan and Korea, and developers there are incredibly happy with the results. In the future, we look forward to working with additional partners to deliver more unique rewards to users as Google Play Points evolves.

Google Play Points is rolling out in the US over the next few days. If you’d like to enroll as a user in the program, open the Play Store app on your Android device, tap menu, then tap Play Points to get started.

Indie Games Showcase from Google Play – meet the winners!

We just wrapped up the Indie Games Showcase in Europe, Japan & South Korea! Back in March we started our search for some of the newest and most creative indie titles from these regions. The search culminated last week with the celebration of indie developers at events in London, Tokyo, and Seoul, and the selection of the winners from our finalists. Developers from 12 countries traveled to the events and showcased their games to the audience of gamers, industry experts, YouTube creators, and journalists.

The games were on show to the public, who spent several hours trying out their games and voting for their favourites, alongside the Google Play team. The top 10 finalists were then selected, and went on to pitch their games, and compete for big prizes in front of the jury.

Now, we are happy to announce the winners from each region! They will be returning home with a prize package that includes promotions on the Google Play Store, consultations with Google teams, Google hardware, and more.

We also want to take this opportunity to congratulate all the other finalists and developers who entered the competition this year. We are impressed by your creativity and passion, and hope you will continue to create amazing experiences for players worldwide.

Grow your indie game with Google Play

Google Play empowers game developers of all sizes to engage and delight people everywhere, and build successful businesses too. We are inspired by the passion and creativity we see from the indie games community, and, over the past few years, we've invested in and nurtured indie games developers around the world, helping them express their unique voice and bring ideas to life.

This year, we've put together several initiatives to help the indie community.

Indie Games Showcase

For indie developers who are constantly pushing the boundaries of storytelling, visual excellence, and creativity in mobile we are announcing today the Indie Games Showcase, an international competition for games studios from Europe*, South Korea and Japan. Those of you who meet the eligibility criteria (as outlined below) can enter your game for a chance to win several prizes, including:

  • A paid trip and accommodation to the final event in your region to showcase your game.
  • Promotion on the Google Play Store.
  • Promotion on Android and Google Play marketing channels.
  • Dedicated consultations with the Google Play team.
  • Google hardware.
  • And more...

How to enter the competition

If you're over 18 years old, based in one of the eligible countries, have 30 or less full time employees, and have published a new game on Google Play after 1 January 2018, you can enter your game. If you're planning on publishing a new game soon, you can also enter by submitting a private beta. Submissions close on May 6 2019. Indie Games Accelerator

Last year we launched our first games accelerator for developers in Southeast Asia, India and Pakistan and saw great results. We are happy to announce that we are expanding the format to accept developers from select countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, with applications for the 2019 cohort opening soon. The Indie Games Accelerator is a 6 month intensive program for top games startups, powered by mentors from the gaming industry as well as Google experts, offering a comprehensive curriculum that covers all aspects of building a great game and company.

Mobile Developer Day at GDC

We will be hosting our annual Developer Day at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco on Monday, March 18th. Join us for a full day of sessions covering tools and best practices to help build a successful mobile games business. We'll focus on game quality, effective monetization and growth strategies, and how to create, connect, and scale with Google. Sign up to stay up to date or join us via livestream.
